Dulux, crown or something else

We, well probably a decorator, are going to be doing lots of painting in our house soon. Which is the best wall paint, white emulsion, gloss and white external wood paint or does it not matter?

It does matter. Nothing too cheap or it'll be hard to work with and look streaky.

TapasForTwo · 01/04/2019 08:20

I agree with Level75. I have used cheap own brand paint and needed to do several coats to make it look good. Plus it is horrible to work with. Dulux and Crown go on far more smoothly and more easily. When we have had professional decorators in they have always used Crown.

redwoodmazza · 01/04/2019 08:26

I always use Crown or Dulux too.

Bluntness100 · 01/04/2019 08:31

A matt finish is good on all walls, it's the best finish, and I like the Dulux washable one you have colour matched/mixed, and I know our decorators were really impressed with it.

Greywind1523 · 01/04/2019 08:40

I’d ask your decorator as sometimes they prefer one particular brand (or can get a good discount).

Ours preferred Crown so he had the Dulux and Farrow and Ball colours that we picked mixed at the Crown Decorator Centre.

IM0GEN · 01/04/2019 08:43

You decorator will use the brand that she prefers . Just ask her. You choose the colours, she will give you a shade chart from her preferred brand. You also choose the types of paint.

Usually material are included in the quotation - what does it say on yours ?

TapasForTwo · 01/04/2019 09:04

I like that you have assumed that the decorator is a woman IMOGEN Grin

Don’t use gloss for anything! It’s very old fashioned now and tends to yellow if it’s a white shade. Eggshell for interior woodwork is better. Miles better! It’s water based and takes less time to get a good finish. Eggshell for exterior woodwork is better too!

BubblesBuddy · 01/04/2019 09:15

I insist on well known makes of paint. Decorators are not using their watered down matched colours of dubious quality in my house!

Thanks all.

IM0GEN we have not got the quotes yet as the decorator is at the end of a long list of trades people we need. Previously we have always provided our own paint. If they supply it what do you do about tester pots and agonising over which colours?

BubblesBuddy I have never noticed gloss so yellow. Is egg shell as to robust? I have a toddler and a baby on the way so I need robust paint work.

Any opinions on Valspar?

flirtygirl · 01/04/2019 20:08

Johnstones and Leyland are good but cheap and better than Valspar.

Dulux is better than Crown.
People love f&b but decorators hate it as it needs lots of coats.

Eggshell is very tough or satinwood. Don't gloss any thing. It hard to get even, it yellows and its not a nice finish.

Thanks for the advice. FIL works for B and Q and so can buy things with 20% off.

You choose your own colours and tell / show the decorator what you want. Either choose from their swatches or get it colour matched.

It will be cheaper for you for them to buy paint at trade prices. And they like working with brand they are used to.

I would get some quotes now for rough dates and then agree an exact start when you know how the rest of the work is going. Good decorators are booked well in advance.

Jackshouse · 01/04/2019 20:35

We will do over the next couple of days but I need to pencil in the other people soon.

Op, if your father in law gets a discount just get your decorator to quote for work only. I always do.
