Is my house is small?

I had a friend visit for the first time earlier. We've just bought our first home. We are a couple, a 4 year old and soon to be another.

She expressed surprise that we bought this house when we have another child on the way as she thinks it's too small for a family of four. We didn't even think about that, it felt like it had enough room (and most importantly, was what we could afford!) but am wondering now!

What do you think? Asking mostly out of curiosity! Here's the dimensions.

LOUNGE:
4.14m x 3.48m (13' 7" x 11' 5")
Door leading into
DINING ROOM:
3.25m x 3.05m (10' 8" x 10' 0")
PVC French doors to back garden. Garden is quite small - half in shade due to house.

KITCHEN:
3.35m x 3.2m (11' 0" x 10' 6")

First Floor
BEDROOM (1):
4.19m x 3.96m (13' 9" x 13' 0")
BEDROOM (2):
4.17m x 3.1m (13' 8" x 10' 2")
BEDROOM (3):
3.05m x 2.44m (10' 0" x 8' 0")

It's annoys me , I grew up in a 3 bed semi with 2 sisters and shock horror one bathroom and toilet... guess what we survived we never felt crammed in. Your house is fine. It's a similar size to mine and although we've no kids 2 would fit with ease...Bigger houses come with bigger costs!

MaisyMary77 · 31/03/2019 11:59

Congratulations for your new home!

Some people just can’t be happy for you; when we bought our house one of my friends was very scathing about it-too dark, too dated, garden too small, terrible location.... she didn’t stop! We stopped being friends quite soon after.

Hope you have many happy years in your lovely house!

The room sizes are good, I looked far and wide and alot of 3 beds have a master of 11 x 10 or 12 x 10 which is rubbish.
That's from all eras.

Your friend is very rude, it sounds like a nice house with good bedroom sizes and you can extend downstairs later on if you want to.

It’s pretty much exactly the same as ours. We’re a family of four and have plenty of room.

BlueSkiesLies · 01/04/2019 08:49

It has a sitting room, a dining room, a decent sized kitchen and three beds.

Perfectly adequate and nice sized for a family with two children!

BlueSkiesLies · 01/04/2019 08:50

Also bed 1 and bed 2 are actually really big Smile and bed 3 is bloody decent as compared to 3 bed houses of old where the 3rd was always a tiny single over the stairs.

userxx · 01/04/2019 14:37

My house is tiny but I love it. It doesn't cost a fortune to re-decorate as and when I fancy an overhaul, its cheap to run day to day, I don't spend hours of my precious weekends cleaning it up. Small houses are the way forward!!

Op, your house doesn't sound small.

SeventhWave · 01/04/2019 14:53

It's a three-bed house. Your friend is a thoughtless twit.

DragonTrainer3 · 01/04/2019 14:54

Bigger than ours, we have a two bed flat with two teenagers! Honestly, it sounds fine OP, don't worry - and your friend needs to learn some manners.

My parents own a 5 bed house they bought for next to nothing many years ago and don't understand we can't do the same on our salaries (but also they didn't buy in London!) so I get similar comments, but just treat it as coming from the ignorance views of a different age and move on.

palacegirl77 · 01/04/2019 15:50

I think if youve bought and she is in rented she will be feeling very jealous. Certain people handle jealousy differently. Some will feel jealous but happy for you and say how wonderful your home is, others will make snide comments so you feel as miserable as they do! Your home sounds perfectly lovely, and even it was the size of a postage stamp if she was a good friend she should find something positive to say. Enjoy your first home!

BecauseYouAreWorthIt · 01/04/2019 15:54

Enjoy your home! Why let others ruin things for you?

HauntedPencil · 01/04/2019 15:58

I grew up in a house that size and it didn't bother me one bit, actually prefer smaller houses now.

Strange of her to comment, in these times like you saying buying at all is a relief and if sounds absolutely fine to me.

mistermagpie · 01/04/2019 16:02

Your house is bigger than mine and I have a DH, two small children, and two cats. Yes it's small but it's cheap and in a nice area and it doesn't take long to clean!

NotMeNoNo · 01/04/2019 16:20

About 100sq.m is a 3 bedroom house without any extensions /particularly large rooms. Much smaller would be pretty compact although not unusual for new builds or London.

Springisallaround · 01/04/2019 16:25

This is a standard size house, indeed I've seen smaller new build 3 beds, some have no dining room.
