Dimmers buzzing

Our newly fitted dimmable spots in the bathroom are buzzing quite loudly - complete defeating the point of having dimmable lights in the bathroom, it's really not relaxing! They also don't actually dim very much between fully on and fully dim.

We fell out with the electrician after he left us with a list of unfinished jobs. Is this an easy fix, or is it a big problem?

Any ideas anyone?

there are several types of lamps, and several types of dimmer.

Some lamps are not dimmable.

It's quite possible that your lamps and dimmer are not compatible.

They are dimmable spots, definitely. I think in need another electrician in don't I?

Thanks @PigletJohn

I never knew this was so difficult but it is. Our pendant lights are dimmable and our LED bubs are too, all three sets of them we have bought trying to fix the problems. As Piglet John states, compatability is key. Our fittings and bulbs are positively frosty with each other. When I gather enough enthusiasm I will try reprogramming the dimmers with another set of bulbs but with lighter evenings maybe it can wait :). If I started again I would choose non LEDs.

Mine have always buzzed... thought that what they did... shrug

I think leds are the problem. We have them installed to reduce heat. Much less fire risk but they buzz. I wouldn’t have dimming in a bathroom. Use candles!!!

It's the LEDs in my experience. It happened with mine in my old house. The halogen were fine but the LEDs buzzed like crazy. Checked with an electrician and it's not unsafe, just annoying. If you find a compatible one then use that.

If you have LEDs (even dimmer compatible ones) you can't use an old fashioned dimmer switch with them: it needs to be a new one designed for use with LEDs.

You need trailing edge dimmers - and make sure you have dimmable LED bulbs. Google trailing v leading dimmers for all the tech info (if you’re very stuck for something to do 😃)
