How much for a bathroom refit?

Had a quote which seems very pricey.

It's around 5 years since we had one bathroom refitted but wouldn't use the same people again...(long story- work was fine but issues with clearing rubbish at end.)

So now had a quote from someone who comes recommended and is trustworthy BUT...

all that needs doing is a straight swap of bath( P shaped), replace loo in same place, replace basin and pedestal with a wall hung unit and a washbowl. So pretty simply plumbing. Oh and an above the bath shower coming off the bath.

How much would you expect? We're SE Home Counties. I reckon it's between 1 and 2 days work.

Just to make it clear- this is another bathroom, not the one done 5 years ago.

I've just been quoted £21k, also Home Counties, to remove the bath and replace with a large shower, supply and fit a vanity and wall hung loo.

That includes all fittings, tiles etc.

It's been years since we had out other bathrooms replaced so not sure whether that's reasonable or not tbh

SnowsinSummer · 30/03/2019 06:55

I hope that's a typo! £21K - twenty one thousand?

Around 5 years ago we had a bathroom refit and it was £1K for labour, £1k for tiling to 3/4 room (quite a long wall) and £1K for ceramic flooring by same guy.

I'm not including the fittings, just asking about labour costs.

This new plumber we hope to use (who's just done some other work for us) wants around £2400 for the straight swap of old-new bathroom suite.

Looking online at price guides, that seems very expensive.

£2400, sounds reasonable to me, especially if the plumber is recommended/has done other work to a good standard.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/03/2019 07:11

I've just had the bill for a refit of our downstairs toilet. Everything replaced in same place so no plumbing to move. Sink, toilet and radiator. Tiled halfway. Bill is £1265. I assume there is more tiling to be done in your bathroom plus fitting a a bath and shower so that price seems fine.

Mine was a very cheap job at £7500(ish) and I was suprised to get it that cheap. Bathrooms never seem to be a cheap room to do.

MairzyDoats · 30/03/2019 07:18

Just had ours done but was a complete refit, so a doorway moved which involved tearing down a stud wall and rebuilding with a pocket doorway, walls and ceiling skimmed, new lights fitted, and everything moved around, 2 walls tiled, which came to 6.4k (labour only). I'm also in SE. Your quote seems quite reasonable tbh...

WBWIFE · 30/03/2019 07:20

If it's a company then it will be more expensive, if it is a private job by a plumber itll be cheaper.

DH said his company charge anything from 3.5k upwards. If he were to do it himself then probably 1500-2k

we are in the south west

SnowsinSummer · 30/03/2019 07:45

It's not exactly a company- it's 2 guys who run the business and it's listed on companies house but it's a small company.
I haven't added in the price of the fixtures yet- the flooring will be around £1K as I want Amtico , bog standard P shaped bath, shower screen, shower above, basin and some kind of hanging drawers underneath, and room 2/3rds tiled with fairly cheap tiles.

SnowsinSummer · 30/03/2019 07:46

Just to add- the plumber won't be doing the tiling- he's just doing the bath swap.

These quotes sound high. We did our bathroom last year. We swapped shower bath out and replaced toilet, sink and a 2m row of units plus full tiling to 2 walls and half tiling to other 2 walls for 3k max all included.

That also included a nice big towel rail.
Did involve a bit of messing with the plumbing as the toilet moved sideways a bit.
Wasn't top quality fittings but not bad either. We did reuse sink taps and kept the existing floor.
We bought all fittings online and paid plumber and tiler separately. I took off the old tiles myself and cleared out the rubbish. I also designed tiling pattern.

Heathcliff27 · 30/03/2019 08:08

We had a total refit 10 years ago, new walls, floor, ceiling, aqua panels throughout, new suite with fitted units wall to wall, gas plumbed into bathroom (just an electric heater there before). The company did all the work and took 5 days. We were £7.5k.

Cafeculture · 30/03/2019 09:04

A relative of mine has quotes of £3200 for replacing bath, toilet and basin, a little tiling and decent flooring.
That's a small company, no posh showroom etc. She wants to get everything done by the same firm.
A plumber was asked informally and said £2500 but that was without flooring, not sure about tiling.
She is in what you would regard as a cheaper part of the country so your quote doesn't seem bad.

Applesbananaspears · 30/03/2019 09:07

I just laid £4200 to replace bath, rip off old tiles, plaster, retile, lay vinyl and paint. All plumbing stayed the same.

guiltynetter · 30/03/2019 09:10

21k?! that is crazy...

We've just had a total bathroom refit, an airing cupboard knocked out to make space for a bath, new tiles new plumbing everything. and it cost 4k including everything.

guiltynetter · 30/03/2019 09:11

We used a local guy who works by himself, we had a quote from. a company for about 8k upwards.

Fortheloveofscience · 30/03/2019 09:20

If you’re just replacing units is there any way you could do it yourself and then just get someone in to do the tiling floors/walls? We’ve just stripped and re-done our bathroom ourselves, it cost £1,500 all in including new sink, toilet and radiator. Our tiling’s a bit shoddy (it only needs to last a couple of years when we’re hopefully knocking down the entire extension, but was truly dire so anything we did would be an improvement!) but swapping out the old units was pretty straightforward.
