Electric underfloor heating

Can anyone please offer any advice on electric underfloor heating? We're having a small extension built next month off the kitchen - it will be 20m2. We have wet underfloor heating throughout the downstairs of the house but it's a closed system so can't be extended into the extension. I really like the underfloor heating but would electric be as good? And will it be enough to heat the room?

Thanks

It will cost a fortune compared to the wet system. We only run our shower room floor for 3 hours at the weekend because of the cost. It does warm the room but we also have a heated towel rail which provides heating too. Are you not able to install a different circuit of wet heating off the boiler, rather than extending the current system?

Is the extension closed off from the house or is it open plan? If it’s open plan, heat will transmit from the adjacent space. Otherwise go for electric. It’s not that bad to to run and you do need it heated. You can use timers and hopefully it won’t be run for hours.

" it's a closed system so can't be extended into the extension. "

I don't understand what that means. Who said it?

it will be expensive to run & won't heat the room - think of it as more of an electric blanket, makes your bed nice & cosy & warms your body but doesn't heat the room

Damn! Thanks for the responses though!
The builder of our house installed the underfloor heating, it runs in all rooms from a central point (in a cupboard under the stairs). We asked him about tapping into it if we were to ever extend and he told us it wasn't possible. The extension will be open to the existing house but I think it will need an additional heat source.
Does anyone know if electric radiators are anymore efficient than electric underfloor heating?

Thanks

no, all electric heaters are equally efficient. They all turn 1kWh of electricity into 1kWh of heat, costing about 15p.

Both electric heaters and electric underflow heating are equally 100% effiecient. More efficient than a wet system or radiators. It’s just electricity costs more.
20sq meters is probabaly about 2KW worth of underflow mat. At say 14p a KWh that will be under 30p and hour when it switched on. You can work out how much it will cost to run in the winter depending on how many hours a day you are going to be using the room.

We have warmup electric underfloor in our conservatory - if you want it to warm the room it costs a lot - so we have it on low to warm the floor and have electril panel heater on wall to boost the temp - it works out cheaper - in our bathroom we have enerfoil low voltage underfloor heating - its on constant temp all year apart from mid summer - it costs hardly anything to run but wouldnt warm a big room

We have electric underfloor heating in a space the same size as yours as I didn’t want a radiator in that room due to layout issues. It works well and doesn’t cost a fortune although the room is south facing which helps. It is never on high and the thermostat has a timer. Don’t forget that your extension will be well insulated to meet building regs so you will use less energy and the room should feel nice and cosy.
