Must haves in new kitchen?

Ok, so I'm doing my kitchen and wondering what "extras" people have that they love?

I'm thinking hot water tap/drinks fridges kind of ideas.

I haven't yet purchased but depending how far out of budget this kitchen goes I am hoping, hot water tap, waste disposal, drinks fridge and I have just seen a water chiller that connects to a hot water tap, so I can't have 100c water and 3c water from the same tap! I'm very tempted although it's quite extravagant, however I'm losing my water tap on the fridge freezer as we made the decision to get integrated appliances so it feels like a good compromise. If you have any of those or other ideas please share. Thanks

I want some of those chrome pull out shelves inside the corner cupboards. They look much better than the plastic two shelf revolving thing I've got now. And a wine fridge. Not sure what to do about lighting and flooring.

redwoodmazza · 28/03/2019 15:09

Have you room for an island worktop? Only I saw one that was on rubber wheels [hidden by the kick-boards] which could be moved to wherever it was needed. Great idea!

magimedi · 28/03/2019 15:21

The thing I love best about my kitchen is the pull out, under the sink bin.

I love not having a free standing bin & having all the rubbish hidden.

Mine is similar to this one but I have 3 bins & it has a shelf on top for bin bags & other assorted bits.

Seem like a very smal lthing but it is lovely.

PazRaz10 · 28/03/2019 15:48

@nagynolonger It's funny isn't it, cause I have just had a kitchen fitted and the one thing I said was NO chrome shelves - having inherited one in the existing kitchen that collapsed all the time!!
I know that others have had far more success with them that this though - but I'm happy with my normal shelves!

Le Mans unit in corners

Tall larder unit with swing-out and pull-out individual shelves (not the single tall slide-out rack)

Lots of pan-drawers (with hidden insert drawers in the top)

Wheelerdeeler · 28/03/2019 16:12

peg drawers

full length larder with individual pull out drawers

hidden bins

Pan drawers instead of cupboards.
Warming drawer
Eye level ovens
2 dishwashers Shock
Boiling Water tap
Induction hob
Insinkerator?

"Magic corners" in corner base units, brilliant.
Waste disposal.
Hugest of American fridges with 4 doors.
Bins in cupboard, they revolve out when you open it.
Cupboards that go up to the ceiling.
Very frivolous but some LED lighting set into the underside of the worktop edges makes the kitchen look lovely at night.

nagynolonger · 28/03/2019 18:17

PazRaz10.....Are they not as good as they look then! I think it may be the only option in the corners but will look into it. We are having LED lighting above the work surface but still not sure about main lights. DH refuses the spotlight type that fit into the ceiling.

mummyhaschangedhername · 28/03/2019 20:16

Thanks, I love the bin idea. I'm having a larder and wasn't sure what "insides" to go for, although I'm tempted to use one I can fit my microwave in out of the way.

We had a waste disposal in our previous house and I hate all the food waste handing around for a week, so that is a must.

Island was part of the plan, but we had to make structural changes so now we have a g shaped kitchen.

Still scratching my head about lighting but the chasing out for the electrics is currently happening so I need to make some decisions fast.

Task lighting. Not behind your head lighting that throws a shadow onto the work surface. Lights from the ceiling are ok as long as they are carefully positioned.

I have two pull out bins. One for general waste and one for recycling. Waste disposal for food waste.

I have two fridges and a freezer. All built in. I just make ice when I need it which saves the expense of a water supply to the fridge.

I have two ovens and an induction hob. I love them all.

I have a large island. I like it. If you cannot have one, consider very carefully where you place things in the kitchen. We have seating at one end of the island which is also great. I also have a double Belfast sink and a single stainless steel inset veg prep sink. This works very well as washing up, soaking and veg prep are separated. Dishwasher is adjacent to Belfast sink.

I like my fitted larder. It’s a wide cupboard with drawers below and cupboards above with shelves and drawers. It’s attractive and worth every penny.

fourcanaries · 28/03/2019 22:36

All of the above and somewhere to hang tea towels.

Lots of plugs

magimedi · 28/03/2019 22:50

I have a daylight temperature fluorescent tube sat on the top of my top level cupboards. Gives an amazing shadowless light.

People dismiss fluorescent light as being something that gives a harsh industrial light. Carefully placed & using the right colour temperature tube it can make for amazing lighting.

mousehouse123 · 29/03/2019 10:03

Re: lighting, we have two lighting circuits (separately switched). One is for task lighting (recessed ceiling spotlights above the counters, sink and hob) and the other for ambient lighting (LED strips under the wall units, LED strips running along the top of the larder/wall units, and wall mounted lights). It's helped keep the peace between DH who likes bright lighting and me who prefers to wander around in a cosy feeling semi darkness! Also nice to be able to turn off the task lights in the kitchen area whilst we're eating at the table. Sorry, that was long ...

dirtystinkyrats · 29/03/2019 12:36

Pull out bin
USBs on sockets so you can have less sockets
We cut all the other stuff in the end. You only need clever storage solutions if you are tight on space.

PigletJohn · 29/03/2019 21:50

have lots of sockets. More than you think you could possibly need.

PigletJohn · 29/03/2019 21:53

socketwall

I have 2 small pull out units either side of the cooker they are 150mm wide. They hold so much it saves a load of cupboard space. I keep spice and herb jars and lots of sauce ones in there too. I had 1 in the kitchen I put in at my previous house and loved it so got 2 this time!

Big pan drawers are fab too, I got much wider ones than what I had last time. Can keep all my pots n pans and a lot of Crockery in them too.

I didn't get waste disposal unit as they were all too small for my liking I got a full sized cupboard and bought a large bin that fits in perfectly and holds so much, fab!

bouncydog · 30/03/2019 09:00

Isolator switches all in one place hidden by a cupboard door.
Franke 4 in 1 boiling water tap - hot/cold/filtered and 100 degree boiling.
Large induction hob.
Full height cupboards with gap to ceiling filled (no dirt on top of cupboards)
Pull out larder unit
Pan drawers
Cutlery drawer
Space for ironing board/vacuum
Shelves in cupboards far enough apart to fit items like food processors/breadmaker
Pyrolitic ovens
Glass splash backs
Powerful extractor over hob

bouncydog · 30/03/2019 09:02

Also would not have a waste disposal as had nothing but trouble with it. Hate bins so all recycling/rubbish goes straight into the bins outside!

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 30/03/2019 09:25

Mine is being fitted at the moment so I'm hoping I don't see anything here I kick myself about! Our upgrades are:

Boiling water tap
Second oven
Waste disposal (technically not an upgrade as we had it before but I love it too much to not mention it)
Le Mans carousels in the corners (would have preferred L shaped corners, but it made the choice of other units too restrictive)
Drawers. So. Many. Drawers.
Integrated microwave
Plinth level lighting as well as undercounter task lighting.

Things I wanted but couldn't quite work into the plans:
Integrated bin
900mm wide extractor that has internal shelving

We're just starting out on our new kitchen journey.

We are very lucky and the new kitchen will be in a different room to at present so don't even have to worry about no kitchen while it's refitted. We're knocking a dining room, study and loo into one room so it'll be a lovely sized kitchen/breakfast room. Weirdly, it'll have 4 external walls apart from a short area joining it to the rest of the house and 3 of these will have windows/patio doors so it should be really light.

The suggestions above are all so useful. We hadn't considered a boiling water tap, but they do sound popular.

We're definitely going for underfloor heating, an island, gas hob, double oven, but most other things are still fluid.

Will be back here regularly to check for other useful suggestions.
