Third bedroom!!!?

Hi all Smile

We are buying our first home and will be in by May (woohoo!) We have 3 bedrooms but do not currently have children. We would like a guest bedroom but haven't a clue what to do with the 3rd!

Does anybody have any suggestions on what to do with a 3rd bedroom/box room/office? My DP has suggested using it as a "walk in wardrobe" style room so we can keep all clothes/shoes etc in that room and have ours more minimal. I like this idea but was wondering if others have done anything else with theirs a bit more out of the ordinary?!

Thanks all! XX

A study? Only trouble with this is it can become a man cave, and I speak from experience. A craft room? But that is possibly similarly exclusive. Our study used to have a sofa bed in it for occasional use, but no longer as we have since extended.
The only trouble with using it as a closet is if you do eventually need to turn it back into a bedroom where will you put all your clothes? If this is unlikely, then it's a good idea

Just to add that if you turn one bedroom into a wardrobe, you are essentially making your house a 2 bed. Something to consider if you might be moving on in time.

I think a walk in wardrobe room is a great idea (we have one). Small bedrooms can be fairly unusable and most buyers woud know they could reconfigure it as a bedroom if they needed to. It is pure luxury to have a fitted wardrobe space with storage for everything. It makes your own room more spacious and you can make that more of a sanctuary.

Sorry, forgot to add: Unless you work at home, a study bedroom can feel very cut off from the rest of the house. We started with that in our spare room but quickly abandoned it. Nowhere to make coffee upstairs! We have the computer workstation downstairs and that works for us, but we do have a large house. Have an office if you need one, but if you just work from laptops, have the wardrobes!

We have a guest room, a study/craft room and a dressing room. I loveeeeee the dressing room! Have a huge mirror in there and all my work clothes etc.

We have a four bed and are now expecting our first. We originally had our bedroom, a guest bedroom a study for my husband, and a sewing room for me. One of those will now be the nursery so we are merging the sewing and study room.

We just put an extra spare bed in ours. We had a guest room we dried washing in, and another we didn't! We regularly had groups of old uni friends staying over, so 2 guest rooms made sense. When we work from home, we just use the dining table.

If you have room, put a bed settee in the dressing room. Then it can be used for guests if needed.

Google 'Studybed', a bed and desk space saving combo.

We have bedroom, a study with desks and bookcases, spare room which is also my 'dressing room' and a dumping ground

Don't plan to move anytime soon

Do keep meaning to clear out the dumping ground room but it never quite gets to the top of the priority list.

when we had four bedrooms and just the two kids so we had a spare bedroom we used it as sort of a wardrobe/dressing room. we all had our clothes and shoes in there along with the ironing board. i also had my dressing table and make up and hair stuff in there so i could sit by myself with my music on and get ready. i was gutted when we had to move everything out to turn it into a nursery!

My parents have got 3 bedrooms and have one as my dads office (full of his family history papers, general household paperwork and his computer) and one set up as a guest room. Mum puts the clothes airers in there as well.

It works well for them as dad uses his office everyday so both spare bedrooms get aired out on a regular basis and don’t get stale.

I use mine as a dressing room, the built in wardrobe is purely for shoes obsessed and I've an ottoman, dressing table, full length mirror and other pieces in there. I love not having it cluttering the bedroom and I can dry my hair and get ready without disturbing the baby or dh as much. Going to be very reluctant to give it up when dc2 comes along !!

wordboss · 28/03/2019 10:35

Thank you all for the great suggestions!

I think using it as a "dressing room" and putting some pop up wardrobes etc in there will make great use of the space for the time being. We do seem to have a lot of clothes/shoes so it's an excuse to not have to do a big clear out if we can keep them all in a dedicated room for the time being! Grin

Maybe once we've lived there for a little while it will become more apparent what we need/would like the room for!

Thanks again all, really helpful xx

We live in a 5 bedroom, but only use two of the rooms for sleeping - my kids share a room. The other rooms are used as playroom, guest room, second guest room/quiet area to hide from the kids lol. I love having the extra rooms.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/03/2019 13:02

We have a box room (will fit a single bed and small wardrobe etc)

We put guinea-pigs in it in winter Grin

Some friends turned theirs into a dressing room. They won't be having DC so it will stay that way. It looked good.
