Storage for hall cupboard

I have a newly created hall cupboard to store coats/shoes - hurrah!
Please hit me with your best organising tips, we are a busy family, the DSs do loads of sport and we have lots of coats and shoes.
I have spent far too long on Pinterest but most of the posts are American and don't feel very relevant.
The cupboard is a generous 2m wide and 60cm deep, with a single door in the middle.
I'm thinking of hanging rails running front to back on each side for formal coats but I'm unsure about the middle section.
Wall hooks/baskets/tubs/IKEA Algot??
TIA

I think I would have the coats in more of an L shape, someone on the short wall and then another from the corner on the long wall. Underneath the coats I would get some kind of shoe storage. The opposite end could then be used for sport storage, some wall hooks for bags and some shelves as these are often more versatile than the storage cube things.

I may be thinking it is bigger than it is though.

Thanks for this.
it is quite big, well its definitely wide/long.
Good idea to have some sports kit on one side, rather than to dedicate it all to coats. I could have shelves for ski/football kit, would be nice to fit as much in as possible as its taking over the house.
I love that my kids are sporty but there is just soo much stuff which goes with it!

Why only one door? That’s a bit odd. It will make it difficult to access the sides when the central section is full. I literally have a wardrobe in my hall. It has conventional doors with a variety of storage. No sports kit but coats, hats and scarves and gloves all catered for. I have a mix of drawers and hanging. I don’t like front to back hanging and how will you drag things out from the back?

I would have one long hanger with drawers below and shelves above. Just like a wardrobe!

The door is being re-used from elsewhere, its an original victorian door which looks in keeping with all the other hall doors. Two would have been more practical I know!
I think if there is only a rail the kids wont use it and a whole sea of coats can make a space feel a bit cramped when you open the door.
But I will see how it looks once it is all finished (nearly there).

I have a hall cupboard about same depth but around 100cm wide and floor to ceiling. I have a high shelf and a low shelf and a hanging rail. Coats obviously on the rail then I have the big storage boxes from Ikea and we each have one each and just chuck shoes in. Bags then get stuffed in anywhere.

trickyex · 28/03/2019 22:20

Toomany that sounds pretty workable. Can I ask which IKEA boxes you use?
I need it to be easy so the idle teens will use it!

@trickyex

Sorry only just seen this - I cannot find them on the Ikea website. They are kind of like the kallax boxes but plain white and longer - I think about 55cm. They may well be in the pax area - they are quite functional and plain so not designed to be on show. They are like a plasticy fabric and unzip flat. They are great for just chucking shoes in.

Thanks, they sound ideal

I saw on a property programme in Australia that a family with 4 sporty children each had a colour

DC1 red
DC2 blue
DC3 green
DC4 yellow

Then everything for that child was that colour and they were responsible for their own storage boxes, hooks etc

Coloured boxes were used for shoes, rugby boots (cleaned mud off first obviously), trainers, cricket boots, hockey boots, (each child is responsible for cleaning their own sports boots before they go in their coloured box) also slippers etc etc

It seemed quite a good system of easy organising for the children and no arguments cos everyone knew whose box of stuff it was

So also coloured boxes for school pe kit, book bags and hats, scarves, gloves and general stuff that each child had

No searching in the morning cos everyone knew where their stuff was in their colour box

Sub that is a fab idea.
I think I may have left it too late as DS1 is 14 but I can ask him and his brother.
I wish I had down that from when they were tiny, would have saved a lot of faffing around!!
