So is it now the case that disliking pebble-dashing means we're anti-Scots?

MiniMum97 · 25/03/2019 23:55

There are no circumstances in which pebble dashing would look better than render. Even if all the neighbours are pebble dash. If you render this will just make your house better than all the others on your street! Maybe some others will be impressed and follow suit!

If you want other ideas to improve the outside of you'd house post a pic.

RollerJed · 26/03/2019 05:50

We did ours about 5 years ago in London, 2 bed end terrace with white pebblesso no more painting, cost was £3500.

Tbh around my way rendered houses look horrible and I'm not sure why, but very tacky! The nicely kept pebbledash houses look better, more cottagey.

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2019 05:56

Op, it doesn't matter if your house looks different if it looks better.

You've got all the options, you may as well go for the nice one. It will add value. You don't need to make it look like all thr others, if all the others don't look good.

It looks shit in England and it looks shit in Scotland. We live just over the border and whenever we drive into Scotland DH and I always joke that we know where we are from the grim houses.

YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 26/03/2019 10:48

Shock I can't believe anyone would ADD pebble dash. What surface do you have at the moment? Can you just paint until you can afford to render?

I just feel like it will inevitably deter buyers and cost you money.

It looks shit in England and it looks shit in Scotland
True!!

BlueSkiesLies · 26/03/2019 11:41

If you type "pebble dash" into google you will be hit with a million links all saying "how much to remove" "how to remove" "can I remove"

No one in the last 30 years has wanted to ADD pebble dash.

Bottledate · 26/03/2019 12:20

We've got a few houses nearby who have clad with (fake?) wood in various colours. It might make the house look different, but that doesn't have to mean bad.

Gazelda · 26/03/2019 12:30

Wow. Eyes opened! I had no idea that pebble dashing was so vilified

Our gorgeous little semi detached cottage is pebble dashed, as was the adjoining house. But neighbour has rendered his pale blue. His looks the more ridiculous, although ours looks bloody odd now too 😤

mrssunshinexxx · 26/03/2019 15:03

Hurrah spoke to hubby and come to a compromise not exactly like the picture but going to explore cladding and being the odd ones out on the street but for the right reasons
Thanks so those with helpful comments

Yes cladding can look lovely and is a much more high end finish than pebble dash, which was generally used to cover up shoddy brick work. And is a ball ache to remove. A bit like the artex of its time.

Ginnymweasley · 26/03/2019 16:38

We have an ex council house we have to keep the peppledash as the covenant on the property states it has to be in keeping with the rest of the houses on the road. The peppledash on our house is shot and cracked and dh keeps having to repair it but we currently can't afford to replace it for the 4000 quid we were quoted. Some people have no choice but to have peppledash whether they want it or not.

mrsstephens89 · 26/03/2019 16:41

Love the pic you put up OP!!!

Troels · 26/03/2019 16:44

A house down the street from us has just done the whole top half in the wood effect cladding in a pale cream after hacking off the cracked nasty render, it looks gorgous.
I saw one on Homes under the hammer who did pale blue/grey also looked very classy.

mrssunshinexxx · 26/03/2019 16:53

Smile I will report back when we decide

Bluntness100 · 26/03/2019 18:13

Yes there are two homes near me, one has a near black wood cladding and the other a sort of griege pale sage green one , and both are really lovely and make the properties look very elegant.

bebeboeuf · 26/03/2019 18:41

Not too sure if I should start my own thread so sorry if I am in the wrong...

Would you clad a end of terrace rendered house instead of rerendering if all the other houses are rendered?

I dislike the render look myself and the upkeep and maintenance over the years is frightful

mrssunshinexxx · 26/03/2019 20:19

Well now I'm of the thought after this thread that you should do what you bloody want whether it will stick out like a sore thumb or not Grin

TroysMammy · 26/03/2019 20:24

I've got a 2 bed end of terrace, no garage and for removal of render back & front and pebble dash on all 3 walls cost me £3,900. Cost of skip and scaffolding included in the price. It took them a good few weeks because it was end of November and the weather was too shitty for them to do it in one go but I could live with it.

TroysMammy · 26/03/2019 20:26

The colour I have is sunrise. Cream, white and sparkly bits.

TroysMammy · 26/03/2019 20:27

It was originally council house pebble dash and had been up for 55 years.
