Hanging coats in the kitchen

We are looking at having an extension and my idea is to have coat/shoe storage as you walk into our new kitchen/diner. However I mentioned this to a friend who said that is a terrible idea as it will make it smell. So any thoughts gratefully received.

Unless your coats smell I don't see why they would make the kitchen smell?

If I could choose I would put the coat closet somewhere close to the front or back door, just for ease. But I see no issue with it being in the kitchen instead.

Oh just seen that it's shoes too! That might be why she mentioned smell.

I still don't think it's an issue anyway. Especially if they're shut away.

I think OP means that the coats would pick up cooking smells. I wouldn’t do it either for this reason

We have coats hung in the kitchen by the back door and wellies too.

We always use the cooker hood and we cook a lot of onions, garlic and spicy food. Our coats don't smell.

If you are having an extension, try and have a lobby built in for storage. It’s not a good idea to have coat storage in a kitchen. Not s great selling point! Do you not have an under stairs cupboard or a hall?

You're having an extension and planning to make the main front door open straight into the kitchen? That's odd....

Get an architect. You could end up spending tens of thousands and knocking value off your house!

Thanks for everyone's input. Just to clarify.... We have a tiny entrance space off the front door and are considering having the children and us come through the back door. (Visitors still at the front) There is minimal space for shoes and bags at the front door. To get to the under stairs cupboard you have to walk through the lounge. We had considered a 'boot room' at the back but this would make it difficult to have patio doors from the kitchen diner into the garden. It is all up in the air at the moment and the architect is round on Thursday!! Any more thought gratefully received.

I wouldn't do it, not because of the coats smelling, but because they will pick up kitchen smells. If you cook curry or fish, that's what your coat will smell of for a while....

We have a very small utility area off the back door, which opens into the kitchen. We managed to fit a small IKEA PAX in there and we use this for coats and shoes. I like this because it’s concealed, and it contains the coats better than hooks would. Nothing smells.

In our front entryway there is not much space so we have a slimline shoe cabinet and a few hooks for guests.
