Where to live in county Durham

Planning on moving to Durham as my husbands job has now moved there. We had thought we were moving to teeside area so we're now confused on what the nice areas are around Durham.
We are looking for good primary and secondary state schools with a budget of around £200-250,000 for a 4 bed house. Hoping for a place with somewhere to walk the dog and maybe a pub or two nearby. We've noticed a few houses in sherburn village online and also over Wingate seems reasonable.
Does anyone have any recommendations or advice?

Have you looked at Chester-le-Street?

ScarletBitch · 01/04/2019 09:37

Darlington is fantastic and borders North Yorkshire/Teeside, and only 20 minute drive up the A1 to Durham. Lots of surrounding villages, and you can get a 4 bedroom detached within your price range.

@CountFosco I agree, Carmel is outstanding, but Hummersknott is just as good, 2 of my DC did extremely well here!

CazY777 · 01/04/2019 09:54

Another vote for Delves Lane and Consett here. This is the kind of house you could get for your budget www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-56842176.html.
I also like Lanchester, Chester-le-street, Seaham and some of the villages to the west of Durham are nice.

ScarletBitch · 01/04/2019 09:57

@CazY777 the decked area is divine! Love the house!

Toon49 · 01/04/2019 10:57

Thanks we have friends who live in Darlington and we love it but the commute to Durham is more like half an hour and with traffic we feel may be a nightmare!
We really like seaham houses in East village are a bit expensive over £300,000 currently and not sure what the other bits are like going to have a proper explore again. We liked Riverside park at Chester le street but some dodgy people on the high street put us off, probably purely chance I'm sure there's similar everywhere but my partner now won't consider it! Still need to visit lanchester and delves area so definitely still in the running!

I like Chester le street and it has some great leisure facilities, I think the high street is awful.

Hummersknott'last Ofsted was poor and my friends who are teachers say it's accurate about the weak leadership team. Of course the students get very good results but that's to be expected with the intake.

Don’t judge Chester-le-Street on its high street. The literally world class sports facilities, great access to cities and countryside, good parks, good schools and good houses more than make up for it!

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/04/2019 17:18

@Toon49 the high street used to be so good when I worked at the old hospital. And its flat so people would come to do their shopping.

Toon49 · 01/04/2019 17:34

Done a u turn on second look at spennymoor not as keen think we had stuck to the new build estates last time and not looked at the whole place. Lanchester is lovely though so that's shot right up to my favourite place! I did like Chester le street I think we need to give it a second chance as it is ideally placed for us! Newton hall looked okay too, yet to look at Sedgefield but think that's another one we'll like by the sounds of it just depends if there's a house in budget we like!

Don't forget Belmont too, there should be houses in your price range.

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/04/2019 17:42

What sort of activities do your children do? We had years of running mine about and avoiding this was a key factor when we moved.

PickAChew · 01/04/2019 18:27

The only limit of Belmont is what's actually available with 4 bedrooms. Not the best secondary school in the area, either.

Toon49 · 01/04/2019 18:46

Good point they like football/rugby sports in general! I guess that along with the good transport are definitely big plus points for Chester le street!
We like to go out locally for food at pubs occasionally too after walking the dog, any child and dog friendly places around chester-le-street?

Football and rugby will mean driving about wherever you are from my experience sadly. Have you looked at Fram as well as Newton Hall?

SosigDog · 01/04/2019 19:22

If we were thinking seaham what schools or areas would people recommend?
My maternal grandmother used to live in Dalton-le-Dale. It was nice and the Dalton Heights bit (where her sister lived) was nice too and cheaper. Nice little local pub as I recall, I used to get taken for chips and coke on a weekend when I visited. Can’t really say what the area is like now as my granny died a while ago and I haven’t visited since then.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/04/2019 19:28

I've no advice, ax I moved away over 20 years ago but it's lively to reminisce.
I lived in Pity Me, in what was then a new small estate, and went to Fram School.
I've lots of friends still in the area.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 01/04/2019 19:34

Have you looked at Cleadon or East Boldon? Although they're heading further north than you'd probably want to be.
