2 storey side return extension - Hip to gable?

Just looking for some advice - previous owners got permission for a two storey side return extension. We're redesigning it as it doesn't quite suit as and as part of this looking at going into loft.

I know that for normal loft conversion you can do a hip to gable conversion but I wondered whether it's possible to have the side return as a gable roof (and make the current roof the same also so it doesnt look odd I would guess!) With the idea being that we'd be using the current loft for storage and have a bedroom the full length of the loft in the side return (if that makes sense?) Has anyone done this?

Ive (hopefully) attached current design with both roof as hip.

We're just finishing a loft conversion with a second story extension.where we went from a hip to gable, we were lucky and got planning for the gable to go over the second story extension. This meant in the loft area we now have a master bedroom that is the footprint of fhe original house minus the width of a staircase, plus an on-suite and another bedroom/store room/office. We have effectively gone from a 3 bed to a 6 bed house.
If we had kept a gable over the second story extension there would have been no 6th bedroom and the en-suite would have taken room from the master bedroom.

Hope this helps

Thanks for replying. Can I ask in terms of going in to loft, was it similar costs as for a "normal" loft extension do you know or was it relatively speaking cheaper as the work was already being done on the two storey extension? Were any issues raised as part of planning by the council at all? Thanks again

Following with interest as we are thinking of doing similarly, with the same type of house/roof dilemma!
