Is this bedroom just too small

We have found a house that ticks most of the boxes. Loads of downstairs space, lots of storage, huge garden and perfect location. However, bedroom four is small. Ds2 aged 13 would be in bedroom 4. It measures 10'9 by 5'9 (3.28m x 1.75m). Could we make it work with space saving furniture. The current owners have a cot, wardrobe and small storage unit in there. This would likely be a forever home with potential to extend eventually. We have four DS.

There's always a compromise somewhere, and the size of the 4th bedroom is a really sensible place to compromise. I think you can make it work. Maybe build some storage in.

We've bought and sold a house with a 6' X 7' bedroom. The buyer put her teenager in it.

Sounds fine for a single bedroom. I don't think I'd want a double in there unless it was just for guests.

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 19/03/2019 09:54

Thank you. Would an average single fit in ok. The length of the room is fine it's just so narrow. I looked at a loft bed but it's too wide. The ikea day beds are quite narrow though.

Draw it out on paper, add the bed, a wardrobe, etc and it's probably fine - if you can pop the bed at the far end or one end depending on the door it'll look more spacious and you won't have to walk past it to get to the other end of the room . You can't pop it in width-ways as a standard singe is 6ft 3.

Look into beds that fold down from the wall. Great Italian designed ones. Bit pricey but if it makes the room and house work then would be worth it. Proper single beds that flip up on wall when not in use, leaving a reasonable size room.

Fancy with desk

Some great ideas. Thank you so much. I'm now off to google beds that flip back against the wall

But there are many options these days. Some designed for occasional use and some for daily use.

TheClitterati · 19/03/2019 10:26

The Italians seem to have nailed contemporary design for wall beds.

twigandgiggleberries · 19/03/2019 10:34

Could you get a handyman to build a custom bed/desk/etc in the space?

jeanniebrownhair · 19/03/2019 10:47

yes, it's fine.

BikeRunSki · 19/03/2019 10:50

Would something like this help storage bed

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 19/03/2019 11:01

My husband is a builder. He just never gets time to do anything at home these days as he works away but I'm sure there is a way around it. Ds4 is moaning but essentially all he does in his room is sleep and read.

The pull down beds are often Calle Murphy beds.

babyboyHarrison · 19/03/2019 15:31

Called !

BikeRunSki · 19/03/2019 15:37

I grew up in a 4 child family. The youngest child usually got the smallest bedroom, but was bribed with having the biggest when the eldest child at home moved out. It was either that or sharing!

I was 16 when I got my own room.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 19/03/2019 15:40

Our boxroom is a similar size. We put in a studybed www.studybed.co.uk

8misskitty8 · 19/03/2019 17:26

How big is the room next to it ? The wall between is likely to be a stud wall, You could Move that wall further into the other room and give the 4th bedroom extra space..

If you put a floor plan up I’m sure some of us will be able to rejig it.

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 19/03/2019 17:36

@8misskitty8 Good idea. Here's the floor plan.
My children are Ds1 14, Ds2 13, Ds3 5 and Ds4 2. Currently Ds3 and 4 share.

My 10yo DS is in the small box room. We've just had a high sleeper with big desk underneath built into the room by a joiner. I thought it would dominate the room but it actually seems a little bigger now

8misskitty8 · 19/03/2019 17:46

Can’t see the floor plan as I’m not on the app.

If you could move the wall a foot into the next room it would make a big difference to the space available in the room.

anniehm · 19/03/2019 17:58

It's the same size as our bedroom 5 but we only have a desk and shelves in there. You could make it work but would be helpful if clothes could be stored elsewhere.

BeauticianNotMagician81 · 19/03/2019 17:59

We are in a four bed detached at the minute. Space is good and we have a garage but it's not our desired location. We need to move for schools really. The other house is a semi. But only the lounge is joined and the two bedrooms above it. I think I would spend all my time in the conservatory and kitchen. This our current floor plan.
