Living in third floor tenament flat with a one-year-old?

Hi there, I'm looking for advice! DH and I and our one-year-old DS are going to be moving house shortly, just letting, not buying. Many of the properties available here are in tenament buildings, on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Am I mad to consider living on anything above the 1st floor with a one-year-old (and hopefully 2nd baby at some point)? I am willing to go look at flats on upper floors, but DH thinks it is a waste of time, and can't imagine me lugging shopping, DS, and eventually a pregnant bump and small baby up 3 flights of stairs. Does anyone have any positive stories to tell about life with small children on upper floors? Thanks.

bizziebee wait 'till you have twins next!!!

Projectilespells · 10/07/2007 23:51

Do you have a lift Bizziebee?

I was demented lving in a flat without a lift. Just too hard. No garden either just a terrace. loads of stones and concrete.

I live in a first floor tenenment - it is fine. It's actually pretty easy to bounce a baby and buggy up one flight of stairs, though I wouldn't be too keen on any more than that... Big wheels on the buggy really help if you are bouncing.

Projectilespells · 11/07/2007 00:16

i had small wheels and a dd who would wake if you breathed near her. Not good lol.

remember to factor in the hoped for second baby

ooooh taht is true, i made sure i got big back wheels i think that makes a hyoooge difference.

Yep, huge respect to Firepile who once bounced her buggy up all the stairs to my flat and back down again. She is the master.

I tried it once, inspired by her buggy bouncing skill, and felt very proud of myself but it was rather nervewracking and the buggy has had an irritating squeaky wheel ever since. Hence the metal shed-on-wheels. (aka car)

But I agree that one or even two flights of stairs wouldn't be much of a problem - though no stairs must be kind of great.

I live on the second floor (no lift) with a 8month old and a 3.5 year old. Been there a year. Used to it, to be honest.

I have a car in the car park. I leave the buggy there, as well as any non-fridge shopping and bags. Dd walks - I'm strict on that,

After reading all the pieces of advice here, I have definitely, definitely ruled out anything above the 1st floor. This was reinforced with a visit today to a friend who lives on the 2nd floor, and I just couldn't imagine doing that several times a day, carrying my 98th percentile DS! My DH is thrilled that I have finally come to my senses, and would like to say thanks to all of you, as he has been saying this the whole time.
