Help me love a house I hate

Let me start off by saying that there is nothing objectively wrong with the house except that everything needs ripping out and that I know I am in a fortunate position to buy a house at all. I know this.

But I've always thought I would live in a naice period property and I currently rent a flat in a converted Victorian house with lovely high ceilings, gigantic windows and spacious rooms. By comparison, every house I've looked at has seemed poky Sad

The only houses we can afford are these types and we're due to go to the estate agents today for POID and POA checks and my heart is just not in it.

We've put an offer in but I don't want the house but we can't afford anything that I do want so what is the point of waiting around and wasting money on rent?

Has anyone been in this situation and learnt to love their house? I don't know what to do.

I live in an old house and spend hundreds on keeping it warm etc. The list of stuff that needs doing is neverending. I think it's a bit of an expensive fantasy. Enjoy being able to afford a house with stairs, that's light and warm and that you can do anything you want to. Better space for family life than of a flat. It will be great. Home is where you are x

Wow, some great suggestions, thanks! I LOVE that link to the extension, it looks lovely and costs less than I thought at £18k! Definitely made me feel more optimistic about what we COULD do with a house like that, I think I must just lack imagination.

We've withdrawn our offer, the house really isn't for me and the amount of work that needs doing is staggering. The garden was quite small so the extension would have eaten up quite a bit of space. Plus the vendors wanted more than we offered and I really don't want to get into a fight over something I only half-want anyway.

DP is being maddeningly supportive and isn't arguing for or against the house either way, just keeps saying he wants to make me happy. Lovely but unhelpful.

To answer some questions -

I don't want to buy a flat. I've lived in flats for 3/4 of my life and I am sick to death of them. Plus we are TTC so I'd rather buy a house we can grow in to over the next 10 years.

I am on Rightmove every day. We've been looking casually for 2 years, seriously for 6 months. We already had to compromise on location as we can't afford to buy locally, so compromising on the house as well just feels like an additional slap in the face.

Our tenancy runs out in August so it would be great to buy something before then. I hate our flat as everything keeps breaking and the landlord says he will fix things and then just doesn't - including an odd damp patch on the wall. We moved in 4 years ago and it the list just keeps growing.
