Planting against our wall

Our neighbors who we are attached to have redone their driveway, and on each side have built some wooden planters in which they've planted some hedges. The planter nearest us is using our wall as the back of the planter. We're planning to redo our own driveway at some point and to put in a new wall, but removing the current one would disrupt their planting. What can/should we do? Surely they should have spoken to us before putting in the planter?

Who owns the wall? Can you unilaterally replace it? If yes, just tell them what you plan to do. They will then have to think about the hedge. However if it’s in planters it won’t get enormous. People often plant against walls and fences they don’t own. Fairly standard of hedge is entirely on your own land.

photo?

It's a garden wall not a house wall?

They effectively have created a 3 sided planter, abutted it against your wall and then filled it with soil?

I think they should have asked permission to do that in the first place.
If you want to replace your wall (which you own?), just tell them that's what you are doing and give them the chance to move the planter before work starts.

Thanks. Is definitely our wall as on our side. Concerned that if we remove it they could claim we've damaged their property (the hedges they've planted) as all the soil will fall out. The planter is on their land but has no back to it, except first our wall. Our neighbors are tricky characters so don't want to give them any ammunition - they previously gave us grief for doing DIY (wallpaper stripping) on a Sunday afternoon.

Sorry, cross post. Yes, garden wall (front garden / driveway) not house wall. Correct, three-sided planter. Don't want to put photo in case they're on Mumsnet and recognise it! Also they have security cameras up so don't want to be caught taking photos!

Doesn’t everyone plant against a fence or wall? Just be polite and firm. If it’s your wall, it’s your wall. You can replace it. Just shore up the soil where the hedge is.

It doesn’t seem a big deal to me. Most people along my row of houses use both walls or fences for planting and nobody gets possessive about whose is whose. When you build a new wall it shouldn’t be too much of a problem, the soil won’t flow out like water.
