Small log burner inside classic 1920s/30s tiled fireplace

We have just found a fireplace like the attached (different colour but same style) behind a board in our house.

We don't want to intall an open fire - draughts - but would love a woodburner, as we have one sucessfully installed in another room.

Can anyone suggest a supplier who does reasonably traditional, but small, woodburners that might sit within such a fireplace? It will have to protrude out onto the hearth (which we'll have to re-tile as it was knocked out for a fitted carpet) as the fireplace opening itself is both shallow and small. Chimney is good - we'll probably run a flue all the way up, as we did for the other room, but the chimney itself was repointed etc last summer.

I think you'd struggle to get a small log burner in that space, how big is the space?
I have a great fireplace guy if you're in the NW?

Was wondering about the Salamander Hobbit, after a bit of Googling? If's only about 30 x 27 x 45 cm so would fit in with space to spare if we refitted the hearth so it could protrude a bit. There's a localish supplier (not NW) who we can go and visit to have a chat to..

We have a hobbit. It's very cute! To point out the obvious it's a bit of a pain in the arse log-wise, but hardly insurmountable. We have a listed house and were limited with size.

I have a Hobbit and am very fond of it. It doesn't chuck out masses of heat but is definitely better than nothing, especially with a stove fan on top.

Narrowboats have very small log burners

I don’t think I’d install one in that fireplace though, to me it would look wrong. I grew up with fireplaces and for most of the year there was no fire in them...in a bedroom, almost never, unless someone was very ill. You could seal it and keep it as a feature, if you have central heating no need for it to be working.

We have a small log burner in the arch of our fireplace . It's a Charnwood and kicks out lots of heat

You could seal it and keep it as a feature, if you have central heating no need for it to be working.

We have the kind of house and the kind of central heating which keeps frost from forming on the inside of the windows but not a lot more, and have found that heating one room at a time (which we do with the other woodburner) is more effective and economical than trying to keep the whole house at a comfortable 'sitting' temperature. The room it's to be fitted in is likely to be used by DD as a place to do A level art work, which means she'll be static for quite long periods.

I agree that we could put in a grate, stuff the chimney and leave it as a decorative feature (the room I'm currently typing in is like that), but the room with the newly revealed fireplace is larger and thus colder...

(We mostly chop our own wood, and if necessary have a supplier of 'short' logs to supplement it)

You will need a big log burner then.

Ooh, Frosty, thank you! Remembered that our existing log burner is a Charnwood, which we have been very happy with. I'll see if they have one with the right sort of dimensions.
