We always have it done annually.

AiryFairy1 · 03/03/2019 08:12

Our chimney sweep recommends every year, especially if used a lot

Bluntness100 · 03/03/2019 08:14

Definitely annually.

Gizlotsmum · 03/03/2019 08:15

Annually here.

BatsAreCool · 03/03/2019 08:16

Annually.

Meretricious · 03/03/2019 08:17

Annually. More if you use wet or not thouroughly seasoned wood.

Lucisky · 03/03/2019 08:45

Annually at least. Also you get a certificate from the sweep to say its all clean and working correctly. Without this certificate you can bet an insurance company would refuse your claim in the event of a chimney fire.

At least once a year if in use, may need more depending on what you are burning and say if you are burning every day.

AuntVanya · 03/03/2019 08:52

There might be something in your house insurance which stipulates how frequently it should be done to keep your insurance valid.
Once per year is usual. Phone a sweep and ask their advice- it may depend on the age/ condition of your chimneys, whether they are lined etc.

Here in Germany it's 4 times a year. Law recently changed apparently. It used to be only 3.
This is if you used your log burner more than just a little in the evening. Otherwise it was only once.

rubyred38 · 03/03/2019 09:04

Thanks ruby I'll take a look that's sounds about right price ....4 times a year omg I don't think we actually have a law in the uk like that.

Once a year for the certificate but the sweep will tell you whether you need it doing more often.

You need to check your house insurance because without an annual certificate you may not be insured against damage resulting from a chimney fire. It's not a lot of money, zero mess and doesn't take long.

Bluntness100 · 03/03/2019 21:56

Did you get a certificate to say it had recently been swept when you moved in op? Normally the first things folks do is have the chimney swept unless there was a certificate to show it had recently been done, and that certificate would usually say when it was recommended to do it again.

If you've no idea when it was last swept I'd avoid using it till you get it done.
