Mover from Herts to Suury/ Berkshire

Hello!
I am 37 and Mum to a 6 and 4 year old (Year 1 and nursery) living in North Hertfordshire. We are looking at relocating this summer, due to my husbands new job and the ridiculously long commute he currently does.
He is based in Crawley, and we have close friends living in Sunningdale, Berks, so ideally we would be somewhere in between.

He doesn't mind a commute of up to 45 mins roughly.

I don't know the area at all, so I'm finding the whole thing quite stressful. I'm constantly on Rightmove but its futile as I have no idea which areas are nice!

As much as I thought i wanted a village, I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere so I guess im looking for somewhere semi rural.
Good schools are a must, walking distance to a nice pub on a Sunday afternoon, with a nice high street that isn't full of pound shops and relatively easy access to somewhere with decent shopping, and I can get my nails done etc.
A direct train into London is also a must so I can occasionally meet up with friends.

Does such a place exist?? Were looking for a 4 bed detached with a decent sized garden, driveway, up to about 750k. Its a huge increase in our current mortgage so I need to make sure its the right move for all of us.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

To be fair, plenty of people probably pronounce it as per your typo 😂

What about Guildford?

LIZS · 25/02/2019 14:18

Woking, Leatherhead, Dorking. M25/23 can be nightmarish at peak times.

I've been looking around Guildford way....I definitely don't want to be IN a town but the outskirts is fine as long as there is nice outdoorsy stuff to with the kids as well. I kid myself I want to be villagey but in all honesty being cut off from civilisation scares me. We currently live on relatively new build development but are spoiled in that its surrounded by countryside, country pubs, lakes etc... and a 10 minute drive into town, grim as it is!

Have been hearing Godalming, Knaphill, Onslow Village, Byfleet, Pyrford, Burpham, Merrow and Horsell a lot.
Can anyone offer any opinions?

If he works in Crawley then it is a bitch of a place to get to during rush hour. I live 7 miles away & it would take about half hour to get to Crawley during rush hour based on a 9am start. Somewhere like Reigate or Redhill would be 45-50 minutes. Guildford during rush hour is up to an hour & 25 minutes. I suggest he checks out Google maps & types in the time he needs to arrive at work to get a reasonable idea & perhaps do a dry run from a few places. Good luck.

Godalming, Knaphill, Onslow Village, Byfleet, Pyrford, Burpham, Merrow and Horsell

The journey from these locations is going to be more like 1hr15m - 1hr 30m in rush hour.

I think Reigate would fit the bill perfectly. Lovely, semi rural with great schools.

Reigate is very nice but not sure you would find a 4 bed detached for that price unless you look outside the town. Redhill or the border between Reigate and Redhill might be better. South park, Woodhatch are in the Reigate area. Or look at Merstham.

Lots of properties in Knaphill and some in Brookwood for sale if you think the journey would be OK.

Woking to London would be at least an hour (probably more) with an early start, longer in the rush hour.

Merrow, looked there recently and found it very nice but expensive.

How about Caterham, Coulsdon, Hooley, Purley? Chaldon is quite rural and kind of near Caterham. Look on a map for the more rural surrounding areas. Closer to London than Reigate.
