Mascerator toilet help!

ContraryToPopularBelief · 25/02/2019 13:42

Ive not long moved and my new house has a mascerator toilet. We're not using it at the moment because when flushed the water is taking ages to drain away.

My eyes are square from looking at Google (and it's not a fun topic to read about 🤢).

Q1. Do I need to call a specialist rather than a regular plumber?

Q2. My washing machine is in the same room and the drum gets whiffy quite quickly (I have done a few maintenance washes with white vinegar but it doesn't really help) could this be linked to the slow toilet drainage?

Q3. The shower tray also takes ages for the water to drain away. Could this be linked to the toilet too?

I don't know anything about these toilets but in your shoes I'd ring a regular plumber and ask, he / she will be able to tell you if it's something they can deal with

  1. Specialist, definitely, normal plumbers don't know about these loos, in fact a v good plumber we use messed up our macerator loo by attaching a clip in the wrong place
  1. My washing machine has the same issue and it’s in a different room on a different floor so I doubt it is connected to the loo issue in your case
  1. Possibly, if they're in the same room, which I assume they are

It shouldn't be taking ages to drain once flushed so I would get a specialist plumber in to see why. These loos are installed where there isn't space for a normal soil pipe and they are fine IF (BIG caveat) used properly - never put anything sown them other than human waste and loo roll. Make up wipes, tampons, anything else will stop them working.

I would just try using a plunger on the loo first in case it is conventionally blocked. The actual loo is usually just a normal loo, it’s just attached to a macerator which mashes everything before passing it down a smaller than normal pipe to the sewers. God how do I know this boring stuff?!
