Has anyone had a tiny extension?

Really odd but our kitchen wall isn't straight, it's not traditional L shaped as such, it's basically a rectangle with a block on one side and I'm wondering if it's possible to add another 'block' the otherside to even it up. Probably total of 4sqm. Would anyone actually undertake this work? Has anyone had anything similar?

Sorry if I've got my measurements wrong, the area I'm talking about is about the same size as a 6 seater table.

Have you priced it up yet? Will it be worth the cost?

Phillipa12 · 24/02/2019 19:47

My mum and dad had a downstairs loo added on to there porch/cloakroom. Proportion wise it was about the same size as yours, foundations had to be built and the total cost was £17k, this was about 8 years ago and they did have wildly varying quotes.

Thanks Phillipa. Not priced it up yet, no idea on costs and hoping others can advise! Worth the cost depends I suppose, I'm not worried about increasing value to the house but obviously if the cost is massive then we can live with the current layout and just try to refigure the kitchen.

I was getting quotes for a similar tiny extension this time last year and due to the crazy prices decide not to go ahead

Poppiesway1 · 24/02/2019 21:39

Looking at extensions at moment, we’re quoted between £1000 - £1200 per sq meter

huggybear · 24/02/2019 21:59

@bebeboeuf can I ask what sort of range you were quoted?

Thank you @poppiesway1 that's helpful.

It was approx 8m2 in total and we were quoted £30k

My mum & dad had their kitchen extended just enough for a bay that had enough room for a 1200mm sink unit, gave them more work surface as the kitchen was only 7 foot by 8 foot with 2 doors in it. It's made a tiny kitchen more serviceable.

flumpybear · 25/02/2019 05:54

We were told 1.5-2k per sq m

huggybear · 25/02/2019 08:34

Thanks everyone.

huggy this is something we are looking at a small extension , if you do get any quotes , could you pop back ? Be great to know what something this small would cost.

SerendipityReally · 25/02/2019 10:06

We priced up getting one done, 2.4x2m to fill in an awkward corner. We wanted to move the utility into the garage too, and the combined cost of the 2 was about 30k. We decided against, and moved some internal doors around instead.

Think about why it's like that in the first place. If the whole street has it then that's less of a worry, but if it's just yours, is there a reason such as drainage? Not necessarily a deal-breaker but would only add to the cost.

huggybear · 25/02/2019 19:10

@serendipityreally thanks, that's helpful. All the houses are different - old and hotch popped. If it's 20-30k then it's a non-starter as the improvement to our lives wouldn't be worth that much.

Have you thought about having a conservatory for the space. They aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I love ours. It was 3x3 metres and cost 10k

huggybear · 25/02/2019 20:48

Nothing against conservatories but doesn't work with our space. Interesting to know though.

£1300 per square metre here. Plus vat.
