Has anyone used kitchen units to create a vanity unit in their bathroom?

I want something wide (100 cms ish) but it needs to be shallow as room is narrow. So can't use a base unit (unless somewhere does shallow base units?) but was thinking I could use a wall cupboard.

I like this kind of look - basically, with worktop around the sink.

Are wall cupboards the right height? Anyone done one like this? Thanks.

Yes we did in a shower room alcove. Just bought white, shiny, off the peg ones from Wickes to match the white vanity unit. DH fitted the carcass to the alcove and put on matching handles.

Forgot to mention, we used a 1000 base cupboard.

wall units are usually 300mm deep so you will need a deeper top with an overhang

The basin may need a cutout deeper than the cupboard so it will need stiffening reinforcement

You can hang a wall unit at whatever height suits your whim. Cabinet Hanging Rail is very strong and because it is one continuous strip, you have plenty of choice on where to put the screws without penetrating pipes and cables.

The plumbing will take up most of the room in the cab but you can put a few loo rolls and cleaning products in. You can't have a top drawer because the basin will be in the way.

A base unit is usually about 500mm deep and can be trimmed shallower by whizzing off the back edges.

Oh, excellent. I was thinking it wouldn't be the right height but it can be any height you like as fixed to the wall. Did you put a worktop and a countertop sink on top?

I've done one like that but very much preferable are the Vanitory Tops that include a ceramic basin and worktop in one piece. Best buy the manufacturer's own cupboard to be sure of a fit.

Don't get the plastic ones, they're rubbish.

Annoyingly, IKEA's wall cabinets are nearly 40 deep but the widest is 80 which is doable but doesn't maximise the space. Deeper that 45 would be too deep for the room.

include a ceramic basin and worktop in one piece.

I'd prefer that but not sure where to look and want to do this on the cheap Grin.

Look at other ikea ranges, would besta for instance work?

PigletJohn · 24/02/2019 17:56

example

there are various styles

800mm is the width that usually fits under stairs.

one-piece top is easy to clean and reduces risk of water or grime getting into the joints.

SwedishEdith · 24/02/2019 17:57

Was just looking at Besta! We have that but it only comes in 60cm multiples. Could do 90cm, possibly.

cheap one

SwedishEdith · 24/02/2019 17:59

Scrap that, was thinking of 30cm multiples. Plus, the divider would be in the place where the plumbing would be.

Oh, thanks for the links Piglet. They're similar to the IKEA ones I've had to discount as too deep.

have a look at caravan bathrooms then.

PigletJohn · 24/02/2019 18:41

this type has a narrow cabinet but the basin bulges out.

SwedishEdith · 24/02/2019 18:53

Sorry, meant they're a better alternative to the IKEA ones I'd previously discounted as too deep. Your links would fit. Not keen on the bulgy sink ones but thanks for looking.

To answer your OP, no, but I used two Ikea kitchen wall units on the floor in my living room. I covered foam seat cushions to make a seat between two tall bookcases and it looked fab! We used them to store board games & puzzles.

Sounds good!

Kitchen wall cabinets and base cabinets are usually just a different depth and are interchangeable. My DIY Kitchens kitchen has wall units fitted as shallow base units. You just need to buy the legs as an add-on, about £2. They also do 45cm depth units and lots of different widths.

However when we had our bathroom fitted we bought bathroom units from a plumber's merchant catalogue and they were basically the same thing.

Then you just need a bathroom inset sink,or semi inset if the depth of the worktop is too narrow to have the front edge of worktop.

I like the all in one vanity units myself, but I realise 1000m ones tend to have a bit more sink than you want.
