Typical costs for some basic improvements

Hi all

Just wanted some ideas of how much some small improvements on a house I'll be completing on soon could cost. Can't really get quotes until I've moved in and can show tradesmen the jobs.

  • turf the garden, I'd guess approx 40m2 max. Garden has not yet been turfed and is quite weedy so might need some prep before laying
  • tile to ceiling around bath (currently half height) and installation of a shower that connects to the taps
  • tile around kitchen between upstands and and bottom of cupboards and at same height where there are no top cupboards (why don't they do this on new builds as standard!?)
  • white wash whole house, currently in cream builders paint. Ceilings and skirting already white so don't think they need doing? I may consider doing this myself over a week or something

Thanks

I would suggest doing it yourselves - turf is easy to lay just need turf and top soil and a hose with sprinkler. For tiling buy a decent tile cutter (ours uses water). No idea on house painting, that's not diy

When you say paint house, I take it you mean internally? Easy job, but white wash is a thing of the past. Plenty of cheap white emulsion available though. B and Q own brand is okay, although I prefer Crown.
It is much cheaper to use seed rather than turf. Even if you use turf you are going to have to prepare the ground first, level it, remove weeds and stones and rake to a fine tilth. Having done all that, scatter seed at the rate stated on the pack, water well and frequently and you'll soon have a new lawn. Anytime from April on would be okay. I had our lawn professionally returfed a couple of years ago and it was just shy of 2k for a moderate sized area. It was the labour that cost I suppose.
Tiling - I have no idea. Your biggest problem might be finding a tiler. Cost though will depend very much on the type of tile, obviously.
