Paint over paint on lining paper

Ive tried googling this but can't find the answer. I want to paint over existing paint on lining paper. Do i need to do anything special to prepare the walls?

What kind of paint is on the lining paper? If it's gloss you'll have problems getting another coat to key. But it's more likely emulsion, so I'd probably just 'dust it down' or if it's a silk finish I might wipe it down (not soak!) with a sugar soap solution to help key the new paint.
I'm sure some people will suggest stripping it back to plaster but that could expose 'problems' that the lining paper is covering. Just expect some bubbling of the paper as the new paint wets it, it should dry flat though.

Thanks so much for your advice. It's emulsion. Im sure the walls underneath and bad! So i did want to avoid stripping the lining paper

Shouldnt be a problem.

I just painted over mine and they've been fine. The other option was strip and have the walls skimmed, but that's more money and mine seemed fine to paint over.

I'd avoid stripping it if you're not wanting to deal with whatever problems are underneath. Maybe run a coat of Zinnsser over it before painting to prime it. You'll have a bastard of a time when you do want to get it down though.

Yup just give it a good brush to get any dust off and pain over.

Just did a whole house of this. We did sugar soap but took care not to get it too wet, and again lighter thinner coats when painting.

Couple of bubbles as we were painting but they went back down. Also filled some holes so filler over lining paper and it was all fine so far!
