Tips to make a rented house a home

O wise and wonderful mavens of mumsnet! Long-time poster (over 10 years) here who has finally flown an abusive marriage after nearly double the time I’ve been posting here — yet another thing I can partially credit to the wise posters here!

Anyway, now I am leaving my comfy marital home and moving into a three-bed unfurnished rented semi with my kids. I am desperately seeking any tips from those who know about such matters on how to make this rented property feel like a real cosy home and haven for me and my children.

It is a classic 70s square semi in fairly good nick with neutral walls and beige carpet throughout— a living room, fair-sized kitchen/diner, small upstairs bathroom and three bedrooms (one pretty tiny!)

So far I have my mind set on plenty of rugs mirrors, and health plants. There is also beautiful little garden, so I will get lots of pots and make it a riot of colour this summer.

Does anyone have any experience to share? Any help gratefully received!

Smile

As long as it's clean, you'll be ok!

Start by getting one room as comfy and cozy as you can.

Do you have sofas and stuff?
Are you allowed to put anything up on the walls?
What's the curtain/blinds situation?

Well done on escaping.
Do you know hat the landlord will allow?
Pictures on the walls make a house more of a home if permitted.

Health plants? Hmm House plants!

I’ll have to ask the landlord what they are happy with — haven’t dealt with them directly yet as it was handled thus far by an agent but at the time of the tenancy agreement then the dealings will be transferred back to the landlord. Basically I’m just so relieved that they excepted me with my children! I’m determined to keep in absolutely pristine condition and will get the kids on board 😊luckily they are secondary school age so no scribbles on walls!

Colourful throws and cushions, check the policy on pictures on walls as a big print transforms the place. Best wishes to you all

No curtains or blinds. Just rails. I have an IKEA so have these fantasies of flowy voile panels Hmm

In our last rented place I bought a really outrageously loud ikea rug for the living room which contrasted well with the boring neutral walls.

That’s a great idea! I will need a huge rug for the living room. Was thinking about jute/sisal but that would be layering boring on more boring...
