rimless toilets and what power shower advice - Pigletjohn et al !

Refitting bathroom, to a mid-price budget.

I have seen rimless toilets, which seem a good idea seeing as I live in the hardest of hard water areas and the scale is, well, off the scale. Anyone any experience of these?

Also, I have a power shower pump in a void underneath the bathroom. Do I need any particular shower or will any bar type do?

Thank you!

Bar shower mixers are for some reason cheaper and less durable than round mixers. However they are usually surface mounted these days, screwed onto a mounting bracket or wall plate, so they can at least be taken off and changed for a new one when they go wrong. Much sadness is caused when tiling has to be hacked off to dig a faulty mixer out of a wall.

You say you are in a hard water area so your plumbing fittings, especially mixers, may have shorter lives. Consider saving up for a water softener, once you've had one you will not want to go back to hard water.

IMO the round-bodied thermostatic mixers by Aqualisa are the best, and easy for a plumber to maintain.

Thank you so much for your speedy reply. I shall definitely look at the Aqualisa ones.

Any thoughts on my rimless toilet?!

Nope.

They seem popular in shops and offices, presumably easier to clean.

If you can find one where the water supply feed pipe enters the cistern at the side, near the top, you could use Parazone Bleach Blocks, which slowly dissolve limescale. They shorten the life of rubber/plastic seals, which is why it is better not to have the supply pipe seal immersed. I have known them perish and drip on cisterns where the pipe enters at the bottom.

Thank you. What I'd really like is an American toilet, where the water absolutely whoooooshes out during a flush. Every toilet I have encountered dispenses a half-hearted trickle.

You'll have to move to America.

Different plumbing system, more water waste.

IrmaFayLear · 20/02/2019 10:37

The first thing I do on a holiday to the US is hug the washing machine. I know they're not very eco, but boy, are they powerful.

Ah, that was in my house when I was growing up...

Sadly my house is 1980s and the "classic" look would look very out of place. (Plus low ceilings; you'd have to be pulling the chain somewhere around knee height!)

We have a duravit rimless toilet with a grohe frame/cistern and it's got a very powerful flush, i have to warn people as it's quite scary if you don't expect it. It's very much water saving though, you can actually give it a second flush straight after the first as it only uses half a tank each time.

Furball · 20/02/2019 21:34

We have this Radar rimless one and would like one in our downstairs toilet too.

As toilets go its great. - does the job and very easy to keep clean. It is also smooth on the outerside and so doesn't have any nooks to collect dust on any edges or screws there etc. as happened on some previous ones. I'd also would like one in our downstairs toilet too.

MyNameIsJane · 20/02/2019 22:04

@johnd2 which flush & toilet did you get. I am interested in the rimless toilet.

Don't get the RAK rimless loo. It is shit. Literally.

MyNameIsJane · 21/02/2019 06:36

Thank you for starting this thread. I was considering the RAK one so I’ll scrub it from the list!

Thanks for the links Johnd

Does anyone have the Villeroy & Boch subway 2.0 or compact 2.0? How is the flush? Does rhe xompavt toilet feel too small?

Is it worth spending the extra for the V&B toilet compared to cheaper brands? @Pigletjohn and anyone else who has tried a few out.

Thanks!

minipie · 03/04/2019 22:44

I have the compact 2.0 DIYamateur.
In fact I’ve had 3 of them in various bathrooms and am installing another in a couple of weeks. I think it’s great - very compact but doesn’t look or feel like a special space saving loo. 6’3 DH uses it perfectly happily (though he does choose our other bathroom with larger loo for a lengthy visit ... but that could be coincidence)

My 72 yr old dad says it looks too small but he admits it doesn’t feel too small when using it.

Flush works fine, although I think the flush power is more dependent on the cistern and flush mechanism than the loo style anyway. There isn’t an annoying ledge to catch poo the way there is with some.

They now do a rimless version, I’ve not had the rimless version before but getting it this time round.

minipie · 03/04/2019 22:45

Oh also the lid and seat lift off in a genius very simple way for cleaning. And yet don’t wobble around when you sit on them.

DIYamateur · 03/04/2019 22:55

Thanks you so much @minipie! Super helpful!

TheDarkOverload · 03/04/2019 23:40

We've just fitted a small RAK rimless. No issues so far. The plumber had issues fitting it but tbh it was probably the plumber rather than the toilet.

I was concerned the flush wouldn't have enough swoosh but it does the job. It doesn't leave any mess and you can flush it again really quickly afterwards.

I might have been a bit thick so apologies if this is obvious to other people but they aren't completely smooth. They still have a ledge around the edge, it's just solid rather than hollow and narrower and smoother. There is still a ledge thing where the water comes out.

Bsc8180 · 04/04/2019 06:40

@DIYamateur we have just fitted a subway 2 and geberit frame. It’s fantastic. We have a cheap rimless in downstairs toilet, the subway 2 is a real step up in quality and flushing ability. First time we have been able to afford real quality bathroom kit.
Don’t buy in the uk import from Reuter-shop.com, 1/3 less than uk prices.

stucknoue · 04/04/2019 06:46

When choosing a toilet I recommend a standard shape - our seat has broken the the model has been discontinued so we have to replace the whole toilet unless I can source a part!

Roussette · 04/04/2019 07:17

Totally agree on the more standard types... I had 2 new toilets fitted and I just cannot find toilet seats to fit it. I've been everywhere, literally hours spent looking on internet. One I have replaced with a seat that isn't quite the right shape but will do. The other one was impossible and I had to replace the toilet.

Thoroughly recommend a water softener, it cuts your cleaning loads, no limescale anywhere

NotAnotherNameChange99 · 04/04/2019 08:16

Water softener was a life-changer! Seriously the best thing we spent money on. My chrome showers and sink taps still look new after 3 years and the toilets just need a quick bleach squirt every few days rather than the daily scale-removing Domestos.

blue52 · 14/07/2019 18:52

@Furball you say you have the Radar toilet - I am thinking about ordering one tomorrow but need to decide today and no-one available at r2 customer services
Can I ask which seat you have - wrapover or slim seat? and if it is quick release, do you have to press any buttons or does it just pull off?

Furball · 15/07/2019 10:16

@blue52 sorry i cant help the seat just came with it no choice and i have never taken it off as i didnt know you easily could
