Kitchen layout critique!

Hi all, am starting to plan out the fitting for our kitchen extension. Can you take a look at this and see if you would change anything?
The washing machine will actually be a boiler (there will be a separate utility but we are anticipating that we can’t have the boiler in there because of venting) and that may be a full height cupboard there instead of the shelves. Colour and worktop also to be confirmed. The island is made up of two sets of massive pan drawers and the under sink is a very clever pan drawer set too. The wide pantry has shelves and baskets and the narrow pantry is a pull out one.

The main thing I’m not sure about is the island set up - it almost looks too small for the room?

You could have your Microwave inside one of the pantry cupboards (just need a socket fitted) (will save you £££ on the microwave itself and keeps it out of the way)

WorrisomeHeart · 20/02/2019 22:16

Oh that’s a thought about a hidden microwave.

Will try and do a sketch tomorrow - room dimensions are (will be!) approx 7.5m from entrance door to bifolds and then 5.7ish m across. From memory there was about 2.9m from the outer edge of the island to the far wall, and the couch I was looking at was 2.4m at its widest (although not sure on placement yet). Not sure on back of the dining chair space but the table could go lengthways parallel to the entrance door wall maybe to avoid clashing with the island? There must be a way to make it work!

Sounds like you've a big space - fixed seating on one side of the table or a bench can save space.

WorrisomeHeart · 20/02/2019 22:23

I was contemplating a bench, that’s a good thought. Thanks again so much!

What about a more American style island - double length, back to back cabinets, drawers on the 'kitchen' side, cupboards on the other, power outlets on the sides, dining table by the large doors?

Can you add in where the table and sofa are going?
Personally I'd have units all along that one wall, forgoing the sink under the window.
More symmetry, or all tall units then one run without any wall units.
I'd make that island twice as long with seating along and at the end.

Have you thought about an island designed in this kind of layout? We use the reduced depth cupboards under the overhang for things like vases that we don't need to get to everyday. Also as the seating is not all in a line it is more sociable to sit and eat or just chat.

How big is the whole room. It's hard to say what is needed or should be changed.
From the picture I'd make the island three times the length running in front of the cupboards.

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments. After having the initial plans back from the architect we’ve swapped where the kitchen is going and here is the current plan - the island is a much better scale for the space I think? Plus this means that the full 4m of the extension is free for dining table and couch.

Better - the island is much more in proportion. Have you got enough storage once you've accounted for the appliances? The island looks to be single depth along much of its length.

WorrisomeHeart · 10/03/2019 10:41

I think so - there is 1800mm of pan drawers in the island and then drawers all along the long runs, except for one corner cupboard for the rarely used stuff. There are two pantry cupboards as well.

Personally I wouldnt have that tall cupboard on the left hand side of the hob - I think it would look much nicer as a wall cupboard and would give you more worktop and a better look, I also like to have space around the hob to put things when I'm cooking, in fact I'd probably run wall cupboards from the cooker hood round to (and above) the fridge freezer to maximise storage but that's just me

WorrisomeHeart · 10/03/2019 16:48

I would as well but unfortunately the internal beam prevents that - it also prevents the tall larder cupboards being on that side. That is a good point about space around to cook. The alternative looked a little lopsided though with tall cupboards only on one side?

Depending on who's fitting your kitchen the wall cupboards could easily be modified to fit around the beam and hide it iyswim
