Is this a ridiculous amount for a new bathroom?

The guy who did our kitchen - and did a fantastic job - has quoted us nearly £9k to do our bathroom.

This seems extortionate, especially as we told him we needed to do it as cheaply as possible - the kitchen went over budget by nearly £10k (for legitimate reasons, the Victorian pipes turned out to need replacing) so that was the money we earmarked for the bathroom gone.

We had some quotes for the bathroom a couple of years ago and the most expensive was £5k, and that included removing and replacing the existing tiles - current guy just plans to tile over them. Can prices really have gone up that much in two years?

The bathroom is small but tall (tiling it the most costly part due to height of walls) and awkwardly shaped (it's been built over the top of the stairs) but nonetheless this still seems an awful lot. What do you lovely lot think?

I think he's taking the piss.

We're outer London and got our bathroom redone a couple of years ago. We moved all the plumbing around, had tiles taken off and the whole lot replastered and it's our only bathroom so they had to reinstate the loo every night and it was still less than £6k - and that was quite heavy, we felt at the time. Get more quotes would be my recommendation.

Just under £8000 less than two years ago, complete strip floor and ceiling rebuilt and walls taken back and board put in. Fittings were mid range not budget.

MillyMolly123 · 19/02/2019 21:10

Just finished ours... around £9K, Yorkshire.

For that we got:

Floor to ceiling tiles ripped out, walls skimmed and coving fitted

4 x new LED lights

1 x new extractor fan

Mid range fittings installed (all Burlington including taps and shower)

LVT flooring

Tiling to shower enclosure, custom made tongue and groove (half height) to all other walls

New radiator installed

Decorating

You can get it cheaper, but I’d say £5k total minimum and more like £7k for a ‘nice but very budget consious’ bathroom.

Gulsink · 19/02/2019 21:36

Sounds like he realised you could afford an extra 10k last time so thought you could stretch yourselves a bit again.
Tiling over tiles would make me raise an eyebrow (I have no experience refitting bathrooms)

Getting mine done next month and it's costing 6.5k for remodel - we're taking down a plasterboard wall and rebuilding it with a pocket so we can centre the door frame and have a sliding door. Tiles ripped out, replastering the walls, new tiles going up, and spotlights in the ceiling. That doesn't include cost of the shower screen, sink and toilet which will be about another 2k...

LuckyMarmiteLover · 19/02/2019 22:53

Could you have ceiling lowered - we have just done this and it makes our bathroom which was taller than it was wide/ling look bigger and need fewer tiles.

DropZoneOne · 19/02/2019 23:07

Mine was nearly £9k but that included shower pump, underfloor heating, plastering of all walls and ceiling, and fully tiled with not-cheap tiles (i took a shine to some sparkly wall and floor tiles)

Plus we went through Wickes - so i reckon i paid £2k more for fitting than i would have done going independently. The main fixtures and fittings were about £3.5k and all the tiles were just under £1k.

If i were you, I'd cost up all the fixtures and fittings, and then allow an installation rate of about £2k (assuming 10 days @ £200). I'd expect you to come in closer to £6k than £9k.

It is late, I am tired, so in brief. He is taking the piss.

Shadow1234 · 19/02/2019 23:54

I would definitely get a couple more quotes, and I would not have new tiles put over old ones, even if it was a cheaper option!

ladybird69 · 20/02/2019 00:12

That sounds like a lot. I’m having new bathroom fitted next month. Bath removed and replaced with a walk-in electric shower, old toilet and basin replaced. Old tiles replaced and extended area tiled. Bathroom fan fitted and new electrical cable. No decorating or flooring. But quote is for £3500. I’m in Gloucestershire if that would make a difference.

PickAChew · 20/02/2019 00:14

Just get some more current quotes.

Mudmonster · 20/02/2019 00:21

We just paid 6.5k for our new bathroom, he took it back to bare brick and started again.
New pipe work as we moved plumbing around, new electrics for downlighting and extractor fan, new window, plastering, tiling and plumbing, oh and a bit of joinery where he boxed in the stairs bulkhead.
It’s gorgeous, the only thing I needed to get on top was tiles and they cost me an extra £200.

Turquoisetamborine · 20/02/2019 16:58

We live in the north east and got a new bathroom last year. To take the existing tiles off, replace them with floor to ceiling tiles, new bath, shower, toilet, sink and storage unit was 2.8k.

We ordered the bathroom suite separately so that was a saving but we completely moved the sink, toilet and bath so that was a bit more expensive. We kept the existing towel rail radiator in situ.

It looks really nice.

Turquoisetamborine · 20/02/2019 16:59

Oh I forgot, that included a plasterer as well but no electrics as we left the lighting.

Coffeeandcrumpet · 20/02/2019 17:04

We have just redone ours, new bath with shower over bath, toilet and sink unit, some pipework, new floor tiles round bath and wood panelling on other walls for less than 2k.we did get some bargains and did tiling, flooring etc ourself's but that is ridiculous. Mind you we did our whole kitchen which looks fab for less than 4k. I can't believe the prices people pay on here.

anniehm · 20/02/2019 17:07

I paid about £2200 for the fixtures, around £700 for the tiles (floor and part wall) plus plaster for the ceiling, paint, mirror ... and nothing for labour (thanks daddy!) but it took 7 full days, long ones so 2 weeks from a normal less superhuman builder. I'm guessing at least £5-6k is the real cost 5 years ago and things do go up!

Sounds like a quote aimed at not getting the business. Do you think he wants the job?

Crockof · 21/02/2019 11:02

Tiling over tiles??? You need another tradesman.

Chickaletta16 · 21/02/2019 11:09

He s taking the piss!! My lovely new bathroom cost me £2900 including bathroom furniture all the shower bath selling led lights and installation! West yorkshire x

nrpmum · 21/02/2019 11:12

Ours starts tomorrow. It is costing just shy of £8500. Includes new boiler, airing cupboard built in, moving the washing machine and plumbing, bathroom ripped out. Tiled floor to ceiling in bathroom and floor in hall, new toilet, sink, bath, heated towel rail, shower screen, mirror sunk in to tiling, alcoves including down lights, spotlights in ceiling, joinery to cover piping.

Includes everything and labour.

liitlepenguin · 21/02/2019 11:16

Ours cost 3.5k north west ! However we ripped everything out and sourced and bought everything directly from the wholesalers fitting was £1800. Agree he is taking the piss.

silverbackmale · 21/02/2019 18:28

Tiling over tiles is very common and is done to save having to replaster the wall when you take the old tiles off and lumps of plaster come off with them.
