Has anyone got a DIY Kitchens 150mm pullout with a shaker style door?

Possibly a long shot as this is very specific, but - does anyone have a DIY Kitchens 150mm base pull out, with a shaker style door? Ideally Linwood but really any would do.

What is the door like? Does it have the shaker 'frame', or does it have a solid door? I'm thinking it's too narrow for the frame.

I'm having a handle wobble, as the ones we've picked are 230mm wide, so would have to go vertically, but I think that would be weird on a pull out. Or would that be OK?

We've got one - it's a different range though. Definitely Shaker door not plain. I'll post a photo in the morning.

Like this one to the left of the sink?

Oh yes, mama! Good spot!

wowfudge A picture of yours would be great.

Thanks both!

The doors on the 150 mm wide units in our DIY Norton kitchen are just flat. We put knobs on these three units and kept all the other handles horizontal.

Looking through lots of pictures of customer kitchens it can look odd when handles go in all different directions so we wanted to keep them all going the same way.

We have Malton and it's just plain.

We also used a knob. Otherwise we have knobs on wall cupboards and handles everywhere else.

I'm surprised how useful we find the unit.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 17/02/2019 07:46

Oh super - thanks so much for all this! I do really like how the knob looks on Frostiee's picture. At the moment though, we've got the same handles throughout, and there is only one 150mm pull out. So just one different handle would look weird, wouldn't it? Perhaps I should have knobs on all the drawers? Oh god - I have to decide before Monday and I've spent literally weeks agonising about all this. The pressure!Smile

We only have three of these narrow units in a big kitchen and so only three knobs. Everywhere else has horizontal handles so knobs definitely look better than vertical handles in this case.
In the big scheme of things handles and knobs are not expensive so why not order a knob or two extra and then decide once the units are in place? Our fitter didn't put the handles on until all the units were in place so there was time to finally decide on handles once we could see what it was really going to look like.
Also if you choose to order more handles/ knobs than you will need you can easily return the ones you don't end up using.

I remember the kitchen fitter talking to me about handle. The nob wouldn’t have worked because it can’t sit exactly in the middle and it needs to

wowfudge · 17/02/2019 10:12

Hi there - photo as promised. It's shaker but not inframe, not that you really notice.

I think just stick with the handle vertically. It's a 'portrait' rectangle, it'll look right. Especially if your cupboard doors also have vertical handles.

Dishwasher handles have always tended to go the "wrong" way round and no one pays that any attention.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 17/02/2019 18:33

Thanks so much, everyone!

I'm struggling a bit because the bar handles we like are stainless steel, but there are no stainless steel knobs in the same brand, so I'm having to have a last minute rethink. Last minute rethinks are not my thing!

wowfudge and decormad - how do you find your cup handles? I really like them, but worried they might not be comfortable for opening large drawers? I do like the idea of cups on the drawers and pullouts, and bar handles on the cupboards.

And I;m still not discounting a vertical handle, frostiee!

The cup handles are great - comfy to use and the drawer systems mean you don't need much effort anyway. Ours are Haefele Henrietta which are widely available though so shipped around for the best price. There is a matching knob.

Stylinit · 18/02/2019 00:01

We have the Linwood & a 150 cupboard (not pull out tho but I imagine door is the same). It’s just flat/plain no frame. We have cups for drawers & pull outs & knobs for cupboards in our kitchen. You wouldn’t fit one of the cups on the 150 and they’re really not huge ones. I can take a pic in the morning if it would help.

Decormad38 · 18/02/2019 02:26

DIY kitchens sell all the handles.

Stylinit · 18/02/2019 06:48

Here you go.

I remembered we actually even have a knob on the 300 pull out (it’s next to a 500 bin which has a cup) because the cup wouldn’t fit properly with the size of the frame.

Then there’s the 150 unit in our utility.

And just a pic of some of the other units with handles / knobs so you can see how they’ve been positioned on different units.

I love the cup handles and like wow fudge says nothing takes a lot of effort to open.

Decent drawers and cupboards should open easily even with a small knob.
Where you need to be careful is with integrated fridges and freezers and the doors on them tend to resist opening because of the seal.
We went round an enormous Wren showroom (not buying from them but to get ideas) and the J handleless fridges were hard to open as you can't get a good grip in the shallow J.
True handleless ones are ok to open

wowfudge · 18/02/2019 07:15

DIY sell a range of handles - they didn't have what we wanted so we bought them elsewhere.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 18/02/2019 09:09

Thank you so much, everyone! This is all incredibly helpful.

Stylinit I am so pleased you posted those pictures - we may only have one 150mm unit, but we have 2 300mm ones, and while the handles we have picked will technically fit on them, they are going to look rubbish. I would never have realised that without your photos.

This is actually good, as it means that I'll have more than one knob, so it won't look stupid.

wowfudge yes, I'm coming to the conclusion that DIY might not be able to supply my ideal handles. DH is going to take some convincing to buy them elsewhere though - he already thinks we've gone for a massively higher hassle option by going with DIY over Benchmarx, on the basis that we have to deal with the ordering rather than our fitter. I need to do some research today, I think. If I can present it fait accompli, he'll be more amenable.

Stylinit · 18/02/2019 09:31

@QuantumWeatherButterfly I had planned for it to have a cup so was very pleased I’d ordered a couple of extra of each type of handle just in case.

The diy experience is more involved however I think long-term our kitchen was all the better for it, not only because the quality is great but also because we’d done all that thinking in the planning stages it all works together beautifully for exactly how we like to use our kitchen. So it’s worth the time investment!

wowfudge · 18/02/2019 09:36

When you order handles/knobs, I suggest you order a couple of extras - of each sort you are having if applicable - because you do find they aren't always all perfect or something may get scratched in fitting. You can always return damaged handles but it's a pain if the fitter can't fit something. I got ours from Handles4U online.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 18/02/2019 14:44

@wowfudge and @Stylinit - are your handles polished? Do you find the hard work to keep looking nice and shiny?

OP posts:
wowfudge · 18/02/2019 14:52

Hi - yes they are shiny and no, not hard to keep that way. I think they might be lacquered, not sure. An occasional wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust and sticky fingerprints is all that's needed.

Stylinit · 18/02/2019 15:32

Yep similar to wowfudge. Easier than I expected to keep clean really - the occasional wipe over (& I expect my cleaners do them once a week as well).
