A moan about toilets and sinks

Moved into new house with lovely looking bathroom. Ooh I thought, how swanky am I!

Hate it. Design over function

Modern bog just doesn't flush effectively omg. Bulk solids disappear ok but unlike with previous loos I'm having to (get the toilet brush out) clean the damn thing extensively, every time. It's not the water pressure so much as the size (tiny) of the bit that holds the water.

So q number 1, do you have a loo that barring the odd time, does an efficient "wipe up" job of the sides/nothing hits the sides in the first place? Because no matter how nice externally, my bog is so being replaced.

Second. The sink. Again, swanky pants modern. But one tap over a stupid plug that is permanently in place and you push it down to seal the hole, means rinse and spitting if done squarely into the sink just coats the plug, or, if done off centre, means copious manual squooshing of water around the sink is needed in order to remove detritus, as the tap thunders on uselessly straight onto the plug.

I'm so disappointed. My old house with ancient Armitage Shanks loo and sink, unappealingly old fashioned, just worked. The bog bogged and the sink sinked.

Can anyone recommend attractive but highly functional replacements? I have been planning on returning to old house and stealing the loo, in desperation!!

Modern toilets can be designed to use less water. You can but sinks with out the integrated plug.

HorseDoorBolted · 16/02/2019 09:35

Im also annoyed by the flush on most toilets, and am currently replacing mine so determined to solve this problem!

Spoke to local bathroom merchant, they said most new toilets are water saving (I’m ok with that but surely he flush doesn’t HAVE to be bad), apparently the key is getting the cistern high enough so gravity does more work.

So I’m having a concealed cistern higher than normal, and a toilet that apparently does have a good flush anyway.

Sink - thats a “click clack” waste, you can get a normal plug but most people want those now so they seem to come as standard on new higher end stuff... buying a new waste and getting us retrofitted wouldn’t be expensive.

Same thing here! Toilet just doesn’t get rid of number 2s it’s rubbish never used a toilet brush so much.

PigletJohn · 16/02/2019 10:11

You should check that you are using "full flush" not "small flush" and that the cistern float is not adjusted a bit low. Apart from that I can only say that imported unbranded bogs are usually quite a lot cheaper than major UK makers. My most recent purchase was a Twyford E100 and I was gratified at how well it works. As it is a BO not HO I adjusted the float to maximise the water level in the cistern.

YMMV

As for plug holes, there is nothing as efficient and durable as a plug on a chain.

Sadly it doesn't look modern enough for people fixated on style.

Beansandcoffee · 16/02/2019 12:39

I think it is the design of the pan. On previous toilets no.2s would just drop into the water. Now they sit on a little ledge with an inch of water and then slide down. Great if you want to examine your no2 but not for skids!!

buckingfrolicks · 16/02/2019 13:58

Indeed Beans, its rather in the German style. Totally unwarranted unless there's a sneaky EU requirement for new loos

Piglet what does BO not WO mean?!

Tensixtysix · 16/02/2019 14:01

And most modern toilets seem to be 'square'. What's wrong with the traditional 'oval' shape?

m0therofdragons · 16/02/2019 14:10

@Tensixtysix our main bathroom has a rectangular toilet. Looks lovely but I've concluded that my bottom is not rectangular! I hate it and avoid using it! Stupid design Angry

PigletJohn · 16/02/2019 14:14

An HO outlet is more common now, it means the soil pipe emerges from the pan horizontally (Horizontal Outlet) so it can go into the wall.

BO means the exit pipr goes downwards, and is mostly seen in older houses where the pipe goes verticallu into the floor (Bottom Outlet). It's more difficult to find one that's a perfect fit, but they can take up less room if your house is built that way.

The instructions for the BO E100 say you can increase the water content a little, I presume because it has to wash the detritus up and over the trap.

I have more faith in established UK makers like Twyfords, Armitage and Idea. Some of their designs have been on the market for many years and I reckon they have the experience and testing to get them right.

BTW, don't buy a square bog unless you have a square arse.

There is a small market for second-hand WCs from the days before water-saving designs. The best I ever had was a syphonic WC, very quiet, efficient, and had a large water pool in the pan. Now discontinued as not water-saving. It cost more than the rest of the bathroom suite put together.

flirtygirl · 16/02/2019 14:24

I have a modern toilet but chose one that's smooth inside so no ledge for poo to stick to and smooth outside so no shapes or shelves for dusting.
It's dual flush and modern but works well. I think you need to change the toilet.

The pop up plugs can come off completely or they can screw off, so just find one you can live with and change.

BTW, don't buy a square bog unless you have a square arse.

Tee hee !! Love it !!

greenelephantscarf · 16/02/2019 15:56

toilet - we have new(ish) water saving ones with a good flush. (b&q own range.

sink - I agree, bloody useless plug, doesn't hold water well either.
but you can just take it out and get a new 'normal' one from a diy store

buckingfrolicks · 16/02/2019 16:55

Didn't realise plug could be changed to ye olde black plastic variety, but that won't stop the stupidity of a single tap cascading down straight into the plug hole. Who designs these things?

Two taps has to be the way to go.

That's quite an education on toilet outlets! Money is no object here - A shower is just a shower and I'll make do with with a bucket and sponge if need be, but a good crapper is for life.

That thread about what's worth spending money on, should have included toilets- never mind decent shoes and good gin, or whatever else they listed, a good flush that leaves the bowl sparkling has got to top the list of life's essentials.

DustyDoorframes · 17/02/2019 12:57

Ahh but the one tap needn't line up with the plughole! Two taps means you are forced to choose between freezing and scalding. One tap, properly aligned, for me!

PeachPotato · 17/02/2019 13:12

You could swap the tap for a mixer that you can swing left and right. That’s what we have and makes swishing easier.
