Cupboard for meters within shower room

We are in the middle of building work and are adding a small shower room downstairs. The current space is consists of a cupboard off our hallway next to the stairs and half of the current kitchen which sits behind the cupboard.
The builder has suggested that we keep the doorway where the current entry to the cupboard is. We'd then build a cupboard door for under the stairs access - this is where our gas and electricity meters are.
Does anyone know if it's ok to have the meter cupboard within a room which may get steamy from showers? (We will have an extractor fan).
Drawing attached (obviously - I've been lurking on the property board long enough to know this!) but unfortunately not necessarily to scale as sketched quickly at work.

Also, to add. I will be checking wth electrician in a week when he is in but just trying to gather opinions/hopefully reassure myself in the meantime!

can you not put the door to the cupboard outside and have it entry enclosed in the bathroom

There is nothing in the regulations that stop you leaving the consumer unit where it is as long as it is in a separate cupboard.

The regulations are mainly concerned with water jets etc hitting electrical equipment which it won't do in a separate cupboard.

There is some minor risk from moisture, but it wouldn't concern me too much. You could re-wire into an IP55 consumer unit if you were that bothered.

the rules for meters, cutouts and service heads are not the same as the rules for domestic wiring (consumer side)

so I think you ought to ask your electricity supplier.

An electrician may or may not be clear on supply regulations.

If you have electrical equipment in a cupboard in a room containing a fixed bath or shower, it is treated as "not being in the room" if the cupboard is kept locked and can only be opened with a removable key or tool. A tool can include a screwdriver if the door is screwed shut. But I am as unclear on that as the next person. It's a question that hardly ever crops up. It's vaguely referred to in the Electricty Act section 21.

Just discovered that there were responses to this. I didn't get any of the usual alerts - wasn't just being rude!

Thanks all. Electrician didn't seem to think it was a problem at all. Although, some of these comments make me think we need to follow it up some more.

Hi, was wondering what you ended up doing and if it was all approved? I have the same problem/dilemma right now. Any help appreciated Smile
