Interior design fans - need your opinions on my tiling idea

Ok, we are renovating an 80 yr old house in Granada and i want to add some very subtle Moorish touches. There are two bathrooms, ground floor one is just a shower room with loo and sink too, very very small, like about 3m2 including the shower space. So, the floor is going to be terracotta tiles, probably square 26cm x 26cm. These could be set straight on or diagonally. Then the walls will be tiled using 10 cm x 10cm tiles in white or turquoise with a crackle glaze, set diagonally and with plain long, thin pieces along the top to finish if tiles are white this could be turquoise and if tiles are turquoise this could be black or a dark orangey honey colour or...? - opinions?
Then, over the long plain pieces i've thought of adding a trim of Alhambra style plaster work, very subtle, like maybe just a sort of leaf motif, will try to find pics and link.

Small tiles work better in small paces. Thought about mosaics?

Damn, my post disappeared while i went to look for this photo: www.alizaresfatima.com/poup/superfi/superf21.htm

That is fab. If you plan to live there forever go for it. If it's an interim home, it's pricey.

This is an example of the stucco work at the Alhambra - i would do a lowest common denominator version, maybe a very simple triple leaf design repeating on a strip about 4 cm high max, along the top of the tiles on bathroom wall. Tiling would be from floor to about 1.30 m .realtravel.com/granada-photos-p3919536-3977120.html

Yes, tripple, i love the white design, thought i'd invented it actually as its more usual to do it in various colours ad naseum. We won't be living in the house forever as it's taken us 4 yrs to get planning permission and in the meantime we had two kids, we may even sell it without living in it at all and see if we can get something bigger. So I want to make it fairly neutral but with some very subtle touches, so maybe i can sell it for big bucks to foreigners

It's very elaborate, even in one colour, I'm less enthusiastic given it'll be in a small space.

I was going to go for a moorish theme in our shower room, but decided against it in the end.... (scottish steading 400 yrs old!)

Fired Earth do some lovely moorish tiles, and I've seen them elsewhere- would look lovely as a border, with white tiles otherwise.

Malaleche · 04/07/2007 22:13

Well, it would work better in the bigger bathroom on first floor but that's still only 5m2 and woud be even more expensive to do. The problem is that even the plain square tiles from that company are around 200 euros a M2 so even just doing a panel of the elaborate one and surrounding it with plain ones would be expensive...

What do you think of the turquoise tiles and plaster strip idea?

here

Malaleche · 04/07/2007 22:15

tissy - my problem is that the house is in Granada and anyone who does anything Moorish with their decor here tends to go over the top so i'm aiming for something really simple or a new take on the Moorish/Alhambra theme - what do you think of the plaster strip idea?

sounds lovely if you can get someone to do it- would it work in a shower room? (I'm thinking mildew, but maybe not a problem in Granada!)

Malaleche · 04/07/2007 22:17

nice link tissy but those are more Persian looking. As they are such small bathrooms i think i need to keep it really simple...

I know, found some more moorish ones, but link is on my old pc which crashed, and can't remember where the company was!

trippleshot · 04/07/2007 22:21

Normally I would object to turquoise tiles, but the normal context would be comptemporary house somewhere in the UK. Given it's Granada, and you have the sun on your side, it could be really nice.

Malaleche · 04/07/2007 22:21

No problem getting the plaster work and tiles here, getting away from it is the problem! You can re-create the Alhambra in your whole house if you want...
It is pretty dry here so hopefully plaster relief in bathroom wouldnt be a problem....

tripple - the turquoise tiles i saw had a faint crackle glaze and were quite pale, they had a very nice depth to them. They were hand glazed and so not uniform in colour either.

here they are- Habibi Interiors some lovely ideas on that site, and less Persian

trippleshot · 04/07/2007 22:24

Well if everyone if going for Alhambra themed bathrooms, a simple, edited interpretation may be a happy relief.

trippleshot · 04/07/2007 22:25

They sound suitably faded and grand then!

Malaleche · 04/07/2007 22:32

tissy - brilliant!, thanks for that link! The example bathrooms have inspired me to go for the expensive small square white tiles and do a panel of the fancy design on the bath in the bigger of the two bathrooms...if budget allows!
