Should I clean the carpet before moving out?

Our house is SSTC. Carpet is definitely a bit grubby - and has been for a while (including when our buyers came to view).
Should I get it shampooed before we move out? Or not bother? Obviously, will scrub the rest of the house - just not sure on the correct procedure with carpets.

It's a nice thing to do if you can afford to/want to bit it's not required. A good vacuum otherwise.

Might be worth checking if the buyers intend to replace it before going to the effort. We ripped up all the carpets in our new place on the first day.

AwkwardPaws27 · 14/02/2019 18:00

Don't - it will almost certainly get grubby again as your furniture is removed and theirs is brought in. Your buyers might be planning to replace it anyway. Give it a hoover and hope your vendors do the same Grin

I would, I hadn’t realised how grubby mine was until we were moving out and I was a bit ashamed tbh.

Thanks for the replies - I can't really afford to do it so was hoping to avoid it if I can, I just wasn't sure of what the majority of people would do. A good vacuum it is!

stayhome whilst packing, we've noticed grubbiness where we didn't even know dirt could be - it's amazing how much it accumulates Blush

Just hoover it.

SinkyMalinks · 15/02/2019 07:30

Our bloody buyer has traipsed mud though my house on his 2nd viewing. I’m not shampooing that! (But will hoover and give a little scrub..)

Sukochicha · 15/02/2019 10:15

I wouldn't.

Sold as seen.

They will also only get mucky when moving out and in, and TBH if they were grubby when the buyers looked round they might be wanting new ones anyway.

I’m just about to complete on the sale of my deceased dad’s house. I was surprised how uncared for it looked once all the furniture was out, pictures down etc. so I’m having it professionally cleaned. This includes window cleaning, kitchen appliances and carpet shampooing. I think it’s a nice thing to do if you can afford it. Of course, selling an empty house gives me the time to do this as I’m not moving out of it on the day of completion. The buyers seem really nice people and I just think that it will be lovely for them to move into a sparkling clean house.

I left my house (and rentals) spotless when left, as were both houses I bought. Pay it forward and clean up.

It's good form.

My buyers asked if they could shampoo our carpets the night before they moved in. We vacated the property over the weekend and put our house contents into storage. (We decided to be an end of chain so moved into my mum and dad’s house and looked for a house to buy a few months later.) We agreed but it was still wet the next day and it was in a sorry state when their movers had finished.

ASauvignonADay · 17/02/2019 09:17

I wouldn't bother. Mine were absolutely filthy and disgusting when I moved in. We shampooed them but they still had to be replaced. Sold as seen I'd say!

If your carpet looks worn, replace it if you want to sell your house faster for a better price. I guess it’s better to have a new one or none at all – let the new tenants choose it. You can also add some touches of design and stuff to make it feel like home. There are some more tips of the kind in this article, may be they will be useful too tranio.com/articles/7-simple-design-tips-to-sell-your-house-quicker/ so good luck to you with selling the house!
