Difficult to say unless you give us a bit more information. Or a photo.

I think it used to be a light switch and they’ve sealed it off as they didn’t want it there.

That needs to be checked out to see if it's live.......

zebakrheum · 09/02/2019 17:12

Yeah, you need an electrician in to make it safe.

DOLLYDAYDREAMER · 09/02/2019 17:32

Yes very naughty. they could have put it all in a junction box which would have been ok. you need an electrician to sort it

BrexitIsComing · 09/02/2019 17:42

Yes, don't touch it. You don't know what the wires are / go to. If it's been done as a bodge job then it could be unsafe as well as untidy/ unclear what the wires connect to.

Looks like someone damaged the cable at some point and patched up with connector blocks. Three options spring to mind, pull the cable and replace -probably not possible, replacing with a maintenance free junction box, replace with a junction box leaving access via a blank facia. Unless you are confident get an electrician in, its not notifiable (unless its in a prescribed zone) but they can test and issue a minor works certificate for your records.

Thank you all so much. I didn't want to overreact and get an electrician. But will get a professional to have a look. I know it sounds obvious but it's only just registered that its directly above a plug socket Shock

Sci fi is spot on, someone's damaged the cable previously and tried to fix it up. You need a proper enclosure ie terminal box around those connector block, but I'd be tempted to crimp or solder and heat shrink otherwise it will be bulky.
