Does this plasterboard patch up look ok? Help!

Hi all,

To cut a long story short our very expensive bathroom refurb has been nothing short of totally farcical.

One of the many c*ck ups involved the shower being plumbed backwards meaning hot was cold and vice versa. To rectify, the plumber needed to cut a hole in the kitchen ceiling below to swap the pipes. We were promised a plasterer to fix the damage. However, the plumber returned this morning (when I was out) and patched up the hole himself.

The hole is 15 x 12 inches, so quite sizeable - he’s used no scrim tape, just plaster. In my limited knowledge, I thought scrim tape would be an absolute must to stop cracks appearing, he says not.

Any thoughts???

That's not a proper fix at all. You need to insist on a proper builder/plasterer coming in.

Thanks, exactly what I feared!

You can see the plasterboard join, it's just not good enough. Your plumber is hoping you won't push for a proper repair. Even when it's dry and you paint it the join will still be visible.

You need a skim plaster over the whole ceiling to make it indistinguishable. That's what you should be asking for. It then needs two to three coats of white paint.
Otherwise it will always remind you when you look up from the bath.

My knowledge doesn’t even stretch to a scrim tape. It looks shoddy.

I’m a builder and plasterer of 40 years experience you need the hole ceiling plastered and re painted next time remember the price reflects the quality of the job expect more agro!

Thanks all - it’s yet to be painted, so should look marginally better once the decorator returns.

I got into a bit of a tussle with the plumber over his shoddy patch up.

He’s both verbally, and on paper, guaranteed the repair for 12 months. He said he took advice from a plasterer and the plasterer told him what he did was right?!?!!!!

Anyway, we’re stuck with it now as he has made it quite clear that he won’t be paying a plasterer to sort it unless it all cracks. So, we shall wait and see...

I just wish tradesmen would do things properly 1st time. I understand mistakes happen but put it right properly rather than trying to scrimp and save. It’s their name and reputation on the line after all! Bonkers.
