Electrician - what qualifications do I need to check?

I am having a new circuit board and rcbos installed. Is there anything I need to check the electrician is a member of (like the equivalent of gas safe engineers for plumbing) and should I be getting a certificate or anything once the work is finished.

Anything electrical makes me a bit nervous and this seems fairly major to me

Thanks

You can check if they are registered with NICEIC.

You should also ask them if they will provide certificates for the work they carry out.

S/he has to be a member of a Competent person scheme, such as the one mentioned (there are several)

And I would add, check that they have been in business for several years (you don't want a beginner). www.gov.uk/government/organisations/companies-house will show when a limited company was set up, and you can also see if the directors have a history of going bust.

Look for someone who is listed as an "Approved Contractor" not just a "Domestic Installer" which is the lowest grade. "PAT tester" is a bit of a sideline but useful for people who do shops and offices.

Many local electricians are independents, or a family business. It's my opinion that you have more chance of having the work done by the qualified person than if you use a firm with a number of employees who may have variable qualifications and eperience.

Personal recommendation from someone you know, and whose house you can go and look at, is valuable.

Thanks. I’ve been in touch and it all looks fine. He came recommended and is registered and certifies his works and building reg certifies. Phew
