Washing machine in cellar?

Has anyone got their washing machine and/or tumbledrier in their cellar, does it work ok or is it a pain to have to go up and down stairs to do the washing?

we have, it's fine

Tentomidnight · 07/02/2019 19:26

Yes, and they both work fine. I do sometimes forget to empty them
though as they’re in a different part of the house. On the upside, no noisy appliances in the kitchen.

There was nowhere else to put them, so that's where they are. This is the second house where they've had to go in the cellar.

The whole of America keeps their laundry stuff in the cellar (basement!)

PigletJohn · 07/02/2019 21:36

Remember that water runs downhill. Where is the drain you will use?

CarolSpatula · 07/02/2019 22:50

Hadn’t thought that far ahead @PigletJohn, good point.

@scaryteacher but is it annoying or not even noticeable?

Yes, ours are.
No, it's not a pain.
It's great to have the noise out the way.
It's great to have things that are soaking out the way.
I do have a sink in the cellar though (had one put in) as I think it would be a pain to have the 'laundry' without access to a sink.

Yes. We installed a Saniflow system to pump the water out of the washing machine, up from the cellar and out into the drainage. It's been absolutely fine. One or two breakdowns over many years, (like twice in 20 years) but small potatoes and is easily fixed. It's a good, simple system.

Drier is self-condensing (water gathers into a pull-out unit that you empty down the sink). Again, absolutely no problems.

Carol yes it can be a PITA, but as we live in a period (1774) house that is rented, with no utility room, it was in the cellar, or outside in the garage. The steps to the cellar are stone, steep and worn, so you have to balance carefully!

Given the house was built before washing machines were invented, at least there is somewhere for it to go, and tbh, it's worth the minor inconvenience to live in such a special house.

We have a washing machine and sink in the cellar - there's a pump under the sink that pumps waste water up to the drain.

Thanks for all your replies, I am feeling very encouraged 🙂

@scaryteacher I love old houses, yours sounds great

@CarolSpatula It has terracotta floors, barrel vault brick ceilings and more beams than you can shake a stick at. It needs an overhaul of the bathrooms, and if it were possible, I'd take it back to Cornwall with me when we leave Belgium this year.
