Ikea daybed reviews

We’re looking at buying a daybed from Ikea. Probably the Brimnes but open to the flekke too. DH doesn’t care for the drawer style or high sides on the hemnes one.

Does anyone have one of these to offer a review?

It will go in the baby room and probably be used as a seat/occasional single if one of us needs an undisturbed night and an even more occasional double for guests. I imagine we might also use it as a kids bed once baby is big enough to need one.

I'm sure it'd be fine and for single bed purposes, and for an occasional double..

Having said that, a friend had one in her guest room (where she'd had a perfectly good double bed before) and since we stayed a lot (largely to help, for reasons I won't go into) often for 2+ nights, I grew to loathe the bloody thing.

It made a very good big bed, but very low, and because it was right up against the wall on my side there was no space for a bedside table or light - to me these are essential. And none on the other side either, since bed is so low. Plus I had to clamber over dh to go to the loo in the night.

I was appalled when friend, now single, later moved house, a very long way away, and announced that she was taking the wretched thing with her!

We have the Hemnes one, its actually pretty comfortable and is a good size when used with both mattresses.

We have the Brimnes in DS2's bedroom. It only gets used when we have guests, and DS2 gets kicked into DS1s room. Guest seem to find it OK. We also slept on it for a week when we were having some building work done, and I thought it was quite comfy too. The drawers underneath are pretty big and are really useful for storing all the bedding for the double bed. I use the double duvet folded in half on top as a kind of cover for the mattresses, and we have 2 firm foam mattresses (plus the thing to put between them to get rid of the gap). DS2 uses it as a kind of lounging place for reading most of the time...

My only gripe with it was that it was an absolute sod to put together. Perhaps not helped by the fact that DH didn't sort all the screws into neat piles... There are tons of screws, and some of them look very very similar, but are just different enough to cause grief if you put them in the wrong place! Apart from that it's a decent bed. We've had it for 4 years and it's wearing well.

We have the Hemnes and really like it but there are a couple of points to consider. You have to store (unless you have another storage option) the mattress for the pull out part on the single part (so it has 2 mattresses). If you like a firm mattress that's not ideal - it's quite squishy with 2 mattresses on top of each other.

The drawers - if you store crap stuff in them, other than just bedding, are really heavy to pull out (to get the double bed bit out).

Also, not sure it would work as a seat / sofa (as with all day beds) because the width of the bed means if you were leaning against the wall / back of the bed, your feet wouldn't touch the floor.
