Please advise, considering moving to Rainham

Hello,
My partner and I are looking to start a family and one of the first steps is to find a nice and homely area where it is possible to find affordable houses that have a decent floorspace; Rainham seems the perfect place.

However, having lived in Greenwich, an area which is really diverse (I am from a south america) and then changing to Rainham, has put me on edge after hearing negative comments about this area.

I have visited the area and the house that I am looking at, it's in a very nice and peaceful area, but I have heard comments that locals are not so welcoming?
I work and commute late in the evenings, my goal in the long term, once I am settled, it's to do some sort of voluntary work as well, but I do not want to be targeted because of my race, so I am sceptical whether it is a good move to make, any advise is really appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Rainham in essex or kent?

TBF, Lois, I think OP is likely to experience the things she's concerned about in Rainham in Kent or Essex.

OP, these are traditionally very white working class areas that in the minds of some locals (sadly the most vocal) have been spoiled by immigration and by ethnic minorities moving out of London. Not all by any means but enough that it won't feel anything like Greenwich.

Sorry, that's horribly negative. They are much more diverse now and South American would be considered white for most in the UK, unlike in US

My experience of rainham (kent) is a pretty diverse population also mixed with lots of families who have moved to the area from london.

Thanks for the replies Bestseller and Lois

The one I am referring to is the one in greater London, also known as Rainham (Essex).

I would go for Romford over Rainham.

AwkwardPaws27 · 04/02/2019 13:05

Oops, posted too soon! I live in Romford, just under a mile from the station. I feel safe walking home from the station in the evening, even when I finish late (so get off the train at 9.30pm-ish). Our neighborhood is becoming more diverse; plenty of families of different ethnic backgrounds at our local primary school. I tend to avoid the clubs in the town centre but that's mainly because I prefer a drink by the fireplace in our local instead Grin
A lot of people living near Romford are commuting in to London, so it feels more like part of London. I find Rainham feels more aligned with Essex.

Thanks for your input AwkwardPaws27. We are also considering Romford, but prices have gone up a bit more in that area the past couple of years due to crossrail.

Anyone else from Rainham that can offer further insight? Thanks all.
