Anyone got any ideas as to how to take the cover off this tap???

It doesn't just prise off with a screwdriver. The ridges on the cover make it look like it might unscrew but I can't get any purchase on it. Feel a bit daft having to call a plumber to change a washer....!

have you hit it yet??

Just gently...I find sometimes things like that need a little shock to get them moving

Do you reckon it should unscrew & a little tap - so to speak - would get it moving?

yes...I'd try the tap and unscrew

can you hold the tap top and lean on the cap with a rubber glove on...palm flat and press and turn

don't lean too hard and have the sink off the wall mind!! Or is is a kitchen sink??

Progress! It should unscrew - I've managed to get the cold side (the one that doesn't need fixing Hmm ) to unscrew - but the bugger still won't shift. Need to go to work soon!

Because its the hot tap if the washer has been dodgy for a bit then limescale is the issue more than likely - try soaking in some limescale remove and a good scrub with a brush of some sort around the edges and then as others have said a tap or knock to break the limesscale. To soak overnight use a sopping cloth with the cleaner on it (ie sopping in cleaner) and stick and tie a plastic bag over it

Got it off :) Its a daft design, it unscrews but there's almost nothing to get a grip on (rubberised work gloves did the trick). But all sorted now - one very very dead washer now replaced. Thanks for moral support all!

Use your hand flat on the top of it to unscrew it without gripping . That's an 80's Tap !!! Amazed it's still functional!

Spray liberally with WD40 or GT85 leave for an hour, re spray and leave for a bit. then have another go at unscrewing the cap ( you are right it should unscrew).

If that doesn't work give it a firm bish with a block of wood - that may break the fusing that is causing it to stick. More than one may be necessary.

If that fails - swear loudly and repeat the above actions.
