Bathroom door issue

Our tiny bathroom is made much worse by the fact that the door opens from the right into the room - so you have to walk around the door to get to the sink behind it. We can't hang it the other way as the radiator is in the way, and we can't hang it to open outwards as the hallway is too narrow and the architraving wouldn't work etc.

So what, if anything, can we do? We considered a folding door but it would narrow the doorway significantly. Pocket door won't work as the wall it would need to go into is above the stairwell and the bannister is in the way. I'm quite close to just taking the damn thing off! Shock Grin

Sliding door? Or a door that opens down the middle? (Like two half doors, so that they don't jut out as far, either inwards or outwards)

Have you a diagram? I think i can picture it but i cant understand why you cant open it the other way? Moving the skirting/door frame wouldnt cost too much.

Other than that: no door, swing door, half door, hippy beady door, shower curtain door, pocket door on rails inside the room..

We have a bi-fold door but it doesn't cause the doorway to be excessively narrowed.
Is your doorway not a standard size?

I have a sliding door on my en-suite, it works really well, sounds like a good solution for you.

wowfudge · 29/01/2019 07:08

There has to be space for the door to slide open though.

Sliding door wouldn't work as the bannister is in the way on the outside and there's panelling and a massive mirror on the inside. I did think bifold would be best but one tradesperson advised against it... will get a diagram Wink

The bit labelled slope is where the ceiling slopes over the stairwell

Just flip it so that it opens over the radiator. The offset for the door handle will probably account for most of the width of the radiator. Then put a auto closer thingy on it so it shuts most of the time and the radiator isnt blocked from heating the room

Surely when you are using the toilet you close the door anyway? I am thinking the upheaval trying to rectify a minor issue will not be worth it.

Can you get one of those doors on springs, (like a restaurant kitchen) with hinge on the other side than it is now.

3luckystars · 29/01/2019 09:18

Oy you could move the radiator further along the wall, change it to a towel rail above the bath. That would free ul the wall.

Or else just remove the radiator altogether and use a pull cord heater on the wall.

I'd suggest getting rid of the radiator and installing underfloor heating to give you more wall space.
