Utility room not next to kitchen

Would it bother you as a buyer if the utility room was on the opposite side of the house to the kitchen? Utility room has washing machine, drier, sink and cleaning supplies.

Can you access the utility from outside?

SpaceDinosaur · 28/01/2019 12:52

I have this in my house.
It's accessible from the garage and garden. Didn't put us off buying (last year) :-)

PuppyMonkey · 28/01/2019 12:53

I’d be ok with that. As long as it didn’t have things like dishwasher or, say, a freezer in it. A separate area for laundry only would be ace.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/01/2019 12:53

My sister has this and it's fine. It's the door for coming in if you're muddy and the door nearest to the washing line. It has a drinks fridge in which is great for BBQ's as you don't have to traipse through the house.

bassackwards · 28/01/2019 12:59

Sounds perfect to me. Why would the laundry appliances need to be near the kitchen anyway? I'd want to keep clean laundry well away from kitchen odours personally. Cleaning supplies for the kitchen could be stored somewhere in the kitchen.

chopc · 28/01/2019 13:01

Thanks all. I was thinking as the utility room traditionally seems to be next to the kitchen. It is accessible from outside

My friend's is upstairs. She has chute that she throws the wet washed clothes down, they come out near her back door so she can take the washing out to hang!

minipie · 28/01/2019 13:16

Wouldn’t bother me at all

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 28/01/2019 13:29

Coffeebeans1 · 28/01/2019 13:47

Personally it depends on the size / use of the room.

If the kitchen is small, some people use the utility as an overflow (fridge / freezer / dishwasher). If this is the case, yes it would bother me.

If the utility is primarily washing machine, dryer, storage space for hoover, cleaning etc. No this wouldn’t bother me, as washing clothes and cooking are two seperate tasks.

Spicylolly · 28/01/2019 13:55

Ours is the other end of the house and it's no problem at all, has access to a patio area for hanging stuff out.

CinnamonToaster · 28/01/2019 14:03

Fine unless it's needed as overflow from a smaller kitchen.

Mayrhofen · 28/01/2019 15:02

I don't understand why it has to be near the kitchen. I love the idea of a utility room on the same floor as the bedrooms so that clothes can be removed, washed, ironed and returned without all that humping up and downstairs.

Sadly we have no room for one.

BubblesBuddy · 28/01/2019 15:27

A laundry upstairs, for most people, would take out a bedroom or wardrobe space. It’s often too big a sacrifice to do that unless you are rattling around in a huge house that’s more like a hotel!

My laundry is the other side of the house from the kitchen. It’s perfect. It’s adjacent to the cloakroom and yes, it has a wine fridge and French doors the outside where we can access the garage, drive and other separate accommodation. It also has masses of hanging for clothes and a big hand wash sink and storage. We put it there so it overlooked the least scenic part of the house’s environment. It freed up other, more attractive, areas of the house for living in. That’s the most important thing. Live in the best part of your house. Have the laundry and cloakroom in the least good area.

Shmithecat · 28/01/2019 15:42

Best utility room I had was upstairs. Most of the laundry and ironing comes from and needs to be returned to upstairs! I had a cupboard downstairs for cleaning products, vacuum etc.

PigletJohn · 28/01/2019 15:45

here it's (almost) next to the front door and has a Fridge Freezer and worktop, so a good place to unpack shopping.

Also has sink, washer, drier, ironing board etc, and is handy for doing stuff in the garden while keeping out of the kitchen.

chopc · 29/01/2019 08:12

Those who are saying have a laundry room upstairs - do you not put your washing out to dry when not raining?

If you have fridge, freezer, sink, dishwasher in main kitchen then its fine. What I wouldn't like is having to walk half way round the house each time wanted cup of tea if kettle in kitchen and milk over other side of house. Laundry room separate is fine and preferable imo.

jessstan2 · 29/01/2019 10:06

Woudn't bother me at all, I actually think it's quite nice.

Megan2018 · 29/01/2019 10:12

Our utility also has a loo in it and is not near the kitchen. I wondered if it would be weird when we bought off plan,as previous utility rooms have always been off the kitchen but actually it works well. No washing machine or tumble dryer noise in the kitchen/diner/family space!

It has kitchen cupboards for storage, a kitchen sink and some worktop space, a large cupboard that holds the hot water tank and all the gubbins for the air source heat pump and room for washing machine, tumble dryer and cat litter tray.

All the cleaning products apart from kitchen ones live there, with all the washing detergent, cat food and cat litter.

scaryteacher · 29/01/2019 10:16

My current utility room is in the cellar (laundry stuff) and the upright freezer is out in the garage. We are renting abroad.

In the UK my utility room is down the end of the hall, adjacent to, but not accessible from, the kitchen. It's accessible from the patio. The laundry stuff and the upright freezer will one again be in residence when I move home, plus the cat trays and maybe the Dyson.

SuseB · 29/01/2019 10:27

Our utility is near the front door (kitchen is at the back) and has sink with draining board and cupboard for cleaning supplies under, washing machine, hanging rails, freezer, coat hooks, storage for hats, scarves, swimming gear etc - and is currently home to the new kitten. Works very well, I don't mind the freezer not being in the kitchen, plus this way I had space for a tall freezer with drawers rather than an undercounter one.

Clottedcreamfudge · 29/01/2019 10:30

Fine if it's got close access to outside plus the kitchen has room for dishwasher and fridge freezer.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 29/01/2019 10:33

In a house the size of Blenheim palace it would bother me.

In a more realistic suburban semi setting it wouldn’t.
