Work going on both sides

Just a lighthearted moan as nothing can be done about it.

We've had our house 2 years and in that time next door on one side has been there every weekend doing the renovation work on their house before they move in.

They are doing it on their own so weekends only.

We manage as we mostly go out when the noisy work is on and then have a quiet few days with DC at home during the week.

Now other side has started major extension project today and it's soooooo noisy.

Scaffolding going up, trucks pulling up, big hammer drills going lots of shouting etc.

So now I have no quiet time and DC is struggling to get a nap.

Please tell me it won't be this noisy forever!

I actually haven't met new neighbours who are starting the extension as they haven't moved in yet and waiting for the extension to be done.
They did send a lovely Christmas card though.

The summer we moved in 4 new houses were being built behind our house so that was crazy noisy for all of summer (during my maternity leave)
So hoping an extension won't be as bad. It's a full on 3 sided double height wrap around extension with loft conversion though 😯

It will be over. If they are reasonable people ( we had some work done to our house and our neighbour asked if we could ask the builders not to work one day as her DD wasn't feeling great and the noise ( which normally she was Ok with ) would be a bit much the day before an exam so we asked them to only do quiet work and they did. Obviously I can't say but the noisy work won't last for ever. Also , I did ask a new neighbour in a new house if her builders could keep noise down a bit ( i.e. shouting , radios ) - I don't think that's unreasonable. Scaffolding is always noisy but it is only twice - I've had it from other neighbours. Once going up , once coming down - but they tend to be quick - they need it for the next job asap Grin - I would be far less worried about the big job which will have an end date than the weekend work . Look up your local council , but normally no work should be done after saturday lunchtime. ( Not sure if that only applies to commercial companies.) & I get you may not wish to get into that discussion.

I hope it all finishes as quickly as it can.

But in answer to your OP , I am sure it will finish . If neighbours sent a lovely Christmas card it sounds like they are the kind of people you could speak to if it became a huge problem.

Wish you well

@BasiliskStare
Thank you, that's the reassurance I need.

Hopefully the shouting has just been from the scaffolders today and the construction company will be considerate.

I'm glad they are starting this time of year in the hope mostikely will be finished in time for summer when windows will be open and the garden more in use.

The plans are quite extensive though and I'm just hoping the finished build won't tower over our tiny little house too much.

The weekend never ending work is a little tiresome but they are a young couple and it's their first house. It's an expensive area and I think it was the only way onto the market for them.
I'm glad an old unloved house will be lived in again some day.
They keep us regularly updated and I think they will be nice neighbours too

Totally feel your pain! We are semi detached and our neighbour is ALWAYS doing something. He has been rewiring the house so we've had the noise of chasing the electrics into the walls since August. I think he might have finished that now but there will be something else shortly - we've been here 7 years and he hasn't finished yet?

Not only that, he never actually finishes a job. So for example he built a massive extension off the back which he has never rendered, so we look at ugly concrete blocks from our garden/back windows. He built a porch at the front in 2015, it's only just had a roof, windows and doors fitted and again it's just concrete blocks.

The other side aren't so bad for DIY but their place is an absolute tip (think old furniture tipped up in the garden, rotting windows and dog poo everywhere) and they also have an aviary of really noisy birds in the back garden.

Funnily enough, we're looking to move!

I do not wish to cat aspersions , but in my experience scaffolders do shout. That said , they unless they are given short wave radios they have to communicate with others further up the building by shouting. Just basic scaffolding is noisy , with big clanging stuff & the lorry to bring it in on - and yes I have always thought scaffolders shout more. However , as I say - scaffolding goes up once and down once and they are pretty sharpish about it. My neighbour had scaffolding being put up and one of them sang Tom Jones songs at the top of his voice. It just made me laugh.

I think once the big project starts then there will be some noise but IME builders are quieter ( of course you have to allow for the necessary noise to do their job. ) But as I say - if can live with it normally - a decent neighbour will try to accommodate you when needed.
