Log burner council house??

I am living in a housing association house and I know you have to ask permission to make changes... Does this include installing a log burner where an electric fire is. Is it likely this will be refused? Has anyone done this in a council property?

I really can't imagine you'd be allowed to do this, as it would be another appliance that wouls need testing annually, in the same way as a boiler or a gas hob. It might involve flue maintenance as well. Gas safety is a landlord's responsibility so even though it was your choice to install it the council would end up responsible for its safe installation and maintenance. My dad ripped a log burner out of one of his rental properties for this very reason.

Sorry 'gas safety' is wrong, same principle for a fire i imagine though. I am not sure of the terminology.... Fire safety? CO2 safety? Hopefully you know what i mean

I doubt very much they would allow this, if you move out it could be a real inconvenience/expense for the next tenant.

TheQueef · 28/01/2019 15:10

No they won't give permission.
It has to be defra and hetas and chimney swept etc.
As long as you have and keep the correct paperwork I can't see them insisting it's removed.
Remember to put back the electric fire when you move.

As well as getting permission from your housing association, you would need building control approval.

If you live in a smokeless zone you might also have to put in a specific type of burner or burn only smokeless fuel - this depends on where you live.

What about an electric ‘woodburner?’ Some of the upmarket (and expensive!) ones are very realistic nowadays and they don’t need a flue.

dalmatianmad · 28/01/2019 20:40

Why don't you call and ask? No one on here will be able to advise you. My HA are really good. I've done all sorts to my home and they've given me written consent each time!

CiderBrains · 28/01/2019 20:50

This is interesting because my next door neighbours (ha) installed a log burner with a chimney coming out of their conservatory last year. The chimney is window height so if the wind is blowing my way I cannot open my windows or my house will be smoked out.

They aren't very nice and dodgy so I fear to say anything to the council in case my neighbours start being horrible (again.)

TulipsInbloom1 · 28/01/2019 20:51

Anything that would involve extra compliance checks (at the HAs expense) is likely to be refused.

I came on here looking for advice but the advice I can see that’s been given is so incorrect it’s unbelievable. Why don’t people just say I don’t know instead of making up whatever they think. Absolutely unbelievable, stupidity at its finest

Same as my neighbours although they owners of the property, stupid twunt complained that my satellite dish was in his air space (took it down as not used) but his smoke coming in my airspace, windows, back door etc is different…his is on an extension, and we are higher up than them as on a steep hill, it’s level with my upstairs windows, council are useless, hoping new laws come in!

All depends where the flue is going to come out, if it’s a chimney breast then there is scope if allowed, if no chimney breast it’s going to major works!

DarkDarkNight · 04/03/2023 17:29

I can’t see the HA allowing it due to the annual gas check and chimney sweep required as others have said. Also in the last few years there is mounting evidence about how bad they are for air quality in the house, I wouldn’t want to be breathing that in.

If you know the advice given is incorrect, surely you know the answer to your own query already then?

None of the posters above categorically state anything, they are just giving their opinions... over 4 years ago.
