Kitchen or dining room looking onto the garden?

What would you prefer? We may have to sell up in a few years so it might be a project we're undertaking for future owners but which way around do you think would be more attractive to prospective buyers? The kitchen & dining areas will be linked by a wide doorless entrance (e.g. The width of French doors) so it'll be semi open plan. The room going into the garden/gravelled terrace is slightly larger.

Will there be another entrance in to the house if muddy/dogs etc?
If not I'd suggest the kitchen as opposed to the dining room
Plus if having a BBQ it's easier to take food and condements out from a Kitchen so the more I think, I'd say kitchen would be better

That's true- hadn't thought of effort to take out plates etc.
The room furthest from the garden is pretty much at the front entrance of the house (entrance area then a couple of steps down). So I'm wondering if I would you prefer to see a dining area or kitchen from the front door?

Yes and there's another separate back entrance if future buyers are looking for dog/muddy boot area.

Then again, because of the garden sided room being larger it would fit a sofa or two as well as a dining table, which might be nice.

One more thing... bifold doors or French doors? (It's a 1650 Cottage with the 'garden room' extension to be built )

We live in a bungalow and as soon as you walk in, the kitchen is in front off the hall.
Personally I like it as I can sit and have a coffee in there with visitors without going through the house. For me it keeps the rest more private - but then I'm not keen on making visitors too welcome!!!
I like French doors, partly on cost but also you don't need the wall room to fold the doors back onto. If it's a cottage I think french doors may look better as well, less modern

I much prefer the kitchen at the back of a property - maybe because that's what I grew up with, but I have had two properties with kitchens facing the front - and hated them. I now have a rear kitchen and love it, so much more social when entertaining, particularly in the summer. If you have young children it's easier to keep an eye on them when you're preparing food and they're in the garden (easier for me anyway because it was the room I spent most of the time in!).

We have young children and I'm torn, on the one hand it's great to glance out the window and see them in the garden, on the other hand it's nice to sit at the table and get a relaxing view.

I think if the garden room is also an entrance I'd prefer a dining space as can multipurpose with shoe cabinet, bench etc for storage and this would be harder to fit in with a kitchen layout I think

Thank you for your thoughts everyone. Yes I like your thinking @WishIwas19again about the multipurpose usage being on the garden side.

So there's no clear cut preference then. I suppose it depends on our property too.

I would very much have the kitchen opening to the garden and overlooking the garden. We have exactly this layout, with an adjacent partially opened up dining space, and I have a dining terrace with also lounge furniture just outside my French doors. For an older property, French doors look classier in my view. It’s less distance to take food and drinks etc in the summer months and is an extension of the house really.

You may find you use a dining room less than a kitchen. Always have the best view from your kitchen! More hours of enjoyment! Better light too quite possibly.
