How big is/are your bedroom(s)?

Will hopefully be starting our extension soon to turn our two bed into a three bed with study (plans show four beds but we’re going to make one bigger and one smaller than on the plans so one won’t really be bedroom size).

The room we sleep in currently feels very large. We only have a double bed just now but there’s lots of space around it and at the foot of the bed with furniture in place too. We are considering letting our daughters share this room when the extension is finished and we will take the new bedroom downstairs.

This room will only be 2.9m by 2.9m. Ideally we’d like a king size bed in the future.

Does anyone use a room of this size as their master bedroom and feel it’s ok size wise? We could slim down the ‘study’ by another few cm but don’t want it to feel like a prison cell in there.

We extended over our garage to create an en-suite bedroom which we moved into. It's a narrow room (about 7 feet wide) but very long (about 23 feet) and is in 3 'sections ' - bedroom, wardrobe and bathroom. We never felt cramped in it, though only had a double bed, and it suited us as it meant DC could have the 2 bigger bedrooms for all their stuff when they were small. Now DS is away at university, we've claimed the biggest bedroom again and DD loves having the extension with her own bathroom. Incidentally, we use our box room as a study so not dissimilar to your plans.

Boohooyouho · 27/01/2019 00:25

Ours is 3.5m x 2.9m and we have a row of large wardrobes along one side so the room itself is pretty much the same size. It’s fine we have a king sized bed and storage at the end of it with plenty of room to walk around. It’s not massive but we only sleep in there. We have the largest room to our girls as they only have that room for their space. We have the whole house

BuffyFlanket · 27/01/2019 00:27

Excellent!

Your room sounds fab. I’d love having those three separate zones. We could stick with the double if space is going to be an issue I suppose, that’s a good point. My OH is so selfish with bed space though haha.

Our study is looking as if it’s going to be around 1.7m wide so hopefully big enough. It’ll be 2.9m long though so I think desk along the whole width of the narrow wall should work.

Boohoo that’s reassuring you feel you have enough space and I agree with what you’re saying about the kids. They’re probably more likely to use bedroom space for awake time than we are aren’t they?

It's not even 10' square. We ignored houses with bigger master bedrooms than that. Ours is about 12' square, give or take and it's just big enough for our king sized bed, a tall chest of drawers eCh and a wardrobe each.

BuffyFlanket · 27/01/2019 00:35

Oh, now you say that 10 foot isn’t a lot is it?

Will be so annoyed if we build this extension then end up with a tiny bedroom Sad

It wouldn’t actually be the official master bedroom though tbf. The room we use currently is very large by today’s standards and if we were ever to sell it’s a room that wouldn’t put people off.

The size you quote is a single bedroom in my book. Way too small to be a pleasant bedroom for an adult couple. We have a super king bed and you would hardly be able to walk round it. Small bedrooms are a turn off. They are built by housing developers to cut costs. They are not for actually living in if you value your sanity!

RagingWhoreBag · 27/01/2019 01:37

Bigger than I need really. I have 2 x 4ft beds next to each other, then two wardrobes of a similar size, so around 16ft wide. There another wardrobe and set of drawers at the foot end of the bed with a small gap between to open the doors so I’d say about 10ft the other way, plus an en suite. There’s a large unused space and much of the stuff in the cupboards could happily live elsewhere (bedding as we lost the airing cupboard last year, Xmas decs, camping stuff etc) so could happily go a lot smaller and of course most people don’t need a bed each. 3 ish metres square sounds fine to me.

The bedroom at our new house will be 14ft by 11ft. The bedroom at our old house was 12ft into bay by 10ft & after putting a king size bed, chest of drawers & wardrobe on the opposite side of the room to the bed you had about half a foot floor space between them which was a squeeze to get past.

The room you describe is just over 9 and half foot square. You could fit a double bed & a small wardrobe in & chest of drawers but it would be a tight fit & I'm not sure the space would allow for drawers to open even. Could get sliding doors on the wardrobe I suppose, which would help. Personally I'd say that size room is for a child.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 27/01/2019 06:50

I measured our 2 bedrooms and the main one is 4.4 x 3.4 and is just right with a king sized bed, wardrobes and drawers, our second bedroom is 2.9 x 3.4 and only really fits a double or single comfortably, I don't think I would put a KS in there

It depends really on what wardrobe space you need in there, if only a very small amount then I guess it would be ok, your study sounds fine as study stuff is quite movable and can be bought to fit appropriately, in fact could you lose a bit of the study space in the length to make more bedroom space.

Do you actually need a study as we were thinking of turning our box room into one and are glad we didn't as we wouldn't want to be shut away at a desk upstairs as we don't do anything that would require this like WAH and prefer to use the computer/laptop downstairs in the family room. We put paper work in filing boxes on a bookcase in the 2nd bedroom.

flatpackbox · 27/01/2019 07:26

Three 12 foot square bedrooms plus a small one, 12 x 7.

I am happy with them. The three decent size bedrooms were one of the reasons I chose this house.

My bedroom has four built in wardrobe doors at one end, maybe 15” deep.

Kingsize bed, bedside table, tall narrow chest of drawers, 4ft wide chest of drawers (which is essentially my bedside table) and a dressing table and chair.

Plenty of room for all of it.

lostlalaloopsy · 27/01/2019 07:34

We have just completed our extension, we put on a double storey extension with family room and bedroom. We just moved into bedroom this week, it's 5m by 4m. It seems huge!! I'm thinking of swapping with one of the dcs!

flatpackbox · 27/01/2019 07:40

We had huge bedrooms in previous houses lost. I had an armchair and side table by the window and enough room to hold a dance. DD had the same which just equalled more room to make a mess in/more carpet space to cover with rubbish.

mrbob · 27/01/2019 07:43

Mine is 4x4m with a separate walk in wardrobe and it feels nice and spacious but not giant. I would not want to go smaller than this if my clothes storage was in the room with me...

Arkos · 27/01/2019 07:52

We are in a 10ft by 15ft. It's fine. We are extending currently and our new bedroom will be 4mx3.5

Magstermay · 27/01/2019 07:55

I think that sounds tight for a double never mind King once you factor in wardrobes/ chest of drawers etc. Depends how much storage you need but it’ll be tight.

Nacreous · 27/01/2019 07:55

The trouble is that comparing a 12ft square bedroom (144sq feet) to a 9.5 sq ft one (90sq ft) isn't a reasonable comparison as at that size 2 ft makes a difference of over 50% of the floor space.

I would strongly recommend getting some squares paper, making some to scale models of your furniture and playing around with it.

The main bedroom in this house is 10ft by 12 but there's a foot of chimney breast. It fits a single chest of drawers, a bedside table, a very small dressing table and a 4.5ft (3 small sections) wardrobe. It's not hideously overcrowded and wasn't designed as best it could be because the radiator takes up a whole wall. However, it would struggle to fit in another chest of drawers, and I would think fitting two people's worth of clothes in that wardrobe would be pretty hard.

But my furniture is all solid wood and quite bulky - I just really think it's worth modelling.or maybe you could measure it out amongst the furniture in your current room, see what looks like? Your study sounds fairly large, can you steal any of that?

ehohlala · 27/01/2019 07:56

Just moved into a new build with a couple of v small rooms so placemarking!

ConfessionalProfessional · 27/01/2019 07:57

That bedroom is too small, OP. Surely the architect told you that?

Toomanycats99 · 27/01/2019 08:09

Our original bedroom was 150 sq ft roughly ( rounded up 13 x 13) It was ok although we had a chimney breast so we lost most of a wall for that.

Having now moved into a loft room it's just about 13ft wide at one end. It then goes to probably about 6ft at the other end but is about 25 ft long.

I do love the extra space as it feels really airy up there - I do use the end as an office though so it's not wasted.

HesterShaw21 · 27/01/2019 08:26

Our house is a new build and the bedroom is
17’4” x 14’2 (5270 x 4324mm). We had a couple of Sliderobes installed and there's an en-suite, plus space for a dressing table & chair for me. The king size bed fits fine but if the room were smaller it would be cramped I think.

Auntpetunia2015 · 27/01/2019 08:32

2.9m is 9ft 5 ish. A double bed is 6ft x 4ft. A king is 6ft x 5ft so I’d say that’s way too small.

HesterShaw21 · 27/01/2019 08:32

Just had a look at our floor plan and the bedroom we use as a home office is 9’4” x 10’0” (2833 x 3033mm); it's the smallest room in the house. I really don't think what you're planning will be big enough to fit a king size bed and storage OP, sorry.

OrcinusOrca · 27/01/2019 08:48

Our smallest room is 3m x 3m and we have a normal double in there. There is one built in wardrobe and the measurements are excluding that. I think a king size would be too big in there to be honest. You could fit one in there though.
