Open Tread Stairs - quick fix

We are just starting to renovate our new house. It's a late60s build and has these open tread stairs.

I don't mind that they are open - we have no young DC or pets to consider so they are fine for now.

We want to do a quick fix on them though - can't spendmuch as we are concentrating on the kitchen diner ( plus double glazing for now, ouch!). They are currently carpeted but it's tatty, and the dust just goes through onto the unit below. DH has just spent an age removing the carpet from the bottom step to see what condition the wood is in.

They are a mess - whoever carpeted them used way too nails and staples so our idea of simply painting them won't work.

Does anyone know where I can get replacement planks suitable for stairs? I have been looking online and struggling to find just the right thing.

Here's a pic taken from below the stairs just to give an idea.

You could use wood filler and paint them, although I'd still be concerned about them being slippy.

To be honest, they look lethal! It might be better, and safer, to get a new staircase fitted!

They were so common in 60s we had them in my parents. No idea how you block them in would not just mdf hammered into the back box them in.

If you fill them in properly the treads become very narrow...

You can buy wooden tops for normal staircases that should work?

Lots of replies there - thank you.

Our visitors (parents) don't like them, but we are used to them and are happy to keep them as they are for now.

In my mind I was just going to paint them. I have seen some paint which is anti-slip especially for this purpose. It's just that the wood is in a bit of a state.

Will have a think, and keep looking.

Cheers all again.

You can get stick on anti slip stickers especially for stair treads. Have a look on Amazon.

Your visitors will appreciate them.

They will cover the worst bits of the wood too.
