Dishwasher conundrum

The prev owner of our new house had their dishwasher in the cabinet under the kitchen island, which they took away with them. It's just a space with sockets and pluming with cabinet doors, so a freestanding one would do we thought.

But when we measured the space, the depth is not enough for a typical freestanding dishwasher of 60cm! If we have one in, the cabinet doors wouldn't shut completely.

Can we put an integrated one instead, even though it won't be used as integrated?

You could. The issue will be that the doors on integrated dishwashers don't stay open without the cabinet door attached. They spring back up and it's a pain. They're also not designed to be opened easily without a door attached....Unless somebody has found one that I haven't 😏

RandomMess · 23/01/2019 19:54

Yeah what @Sugarhunnyicedtea said but just put a door on it?

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 23/01/2019 19:56

I read it as a normal cupboard - you need a special door for an integrated dishwasher don't you?

RandomMess · 23/01/2019 19:58

Nah I think it's a normal door front and the dishwasher has the bits for it to be attached to?

We need @PigletJohn I think...

What did they previously have in there? We have semi integrated (panel fixed to door front but controls exposed) and replaced like for like but new one was still deeper and a slightly tighter fit. If you have plinth a freestanding one won't be high enough for the door to clear it.

wowfudge · 23/01/2019 20:01

Did they definitely have the doors on when they had their dishwasher in there? Just thinking they might have put the doors of the cabinet back on so there wasn't a hole with no dishwasher.

Can you post a photo? Your OP is a bit unclear and it may help. Plus, seeing the space might mean people can suggest something you may not have thought of. Any ideas what make of dishwasher they had?

Jayfee · 23/01/2019 20:09

We used to do this for washing machines by buying a smaller machine. We had to buy a machine shallower from back to front. You might find there is a smaller freestanding dishwasher. If you get an integrated one you need a door to fit and a door fixing kit.

Ikea dishwashers are 55.5cm deep – at least the slimline one is, would that work?

YetAnotherThing · 23/01/2019 20:43

Missing the point, but if it was integrated previous owners shouldn’t have taken it

NuttyBetty · 23/01/2019 22:35

Thank you for the replies!

They removed the plinth and put a full size freestanding one, though I can't remember the model.

Here is the photo. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

That looks so shallow - were they drawer style ones?

NuttyBetty · 23/01/2019 23:00

Can't remember. It measures about 59 cm in depth and 60 cm with the doors.

Looks like they've left the dishwasher salt funnel - anything identifying on it or does anyone recognise it? Might help find a shallower dishwasher for you.

OP you might find this MSE thread useful. Time to hit the shops with a tape measure!
