Sewage smell in bathroom

Just taken over the tenancy of a flat in a modern block, and the main bathroom smells of sewage. En suite does not smell.

I tried using a plunger in the toilet and it may have improved things, but not cured it. And it may be being masked a bit by the toilet block I put in.

I googled, and info seems to suggest it might be coming via the bath or basin, though I still suspect toilet is the problem.

Any advice? (Secretly hoping that Piglet John might help, as well as the rest of you lovely lot.)

Have you tried putting drain unblocker down the plug holes? Or you could use bicarb and white vinegar and hot water. Might need doing a few times.

My en-suite often smells of drains and I clear them as above which helps.

Was the flat empty for a while before you moved in? Might go after a while but I would keep flushing it loads to wash the drains in the meantime

It’s probably gas from the drains

Things to check would be.

Do all sinks/baths have a p trap or similar installed. Are they weeping atall?

You may have a Durgo air valve in the partition wall if you don’t have a soil stack outside. These get stuck after about 3 years look for access hatches for it.

Your best off Airing the bathroom out and run the taps for a good while. Then go investigate with your nose. Where is the smell worst.

Sometimes I’ve seen people have removed the sleeve inside the plug hole in more modern setups which acts as the Airgap and hair collector.

Drains blocked. Ask your landlord to fix it because it is most.likely to be blockage further away down than where your flat's drain is ending.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Smell gone, without me doing much except a lot of flushing and use of extractor fan.

It's probably the sink. This is where everyone brushes their teeth. After brushing teeth/shaving etc run the hot tap for couple of minutes with a bit of disinfectant towards the end. Hope this helps...
