Removal costs

Before I get any quotes - so I don’t faint from shock - roughly speaking how much am I going to need to budget for a full removal service including packing? Moving from a 4 bed semi to around a mile away in the north of England. Thanks!

Hmm I seem to remember a friend of mine paying about £2000 to move from London to up north.

Topsyloulou · 20/01/2019 20:44

We paid £900 a month ago to move from a 4 bed detached to a 5 bed detached over 3 floors 3 miles away. That was the middle of the range of quotes we had. I'm in Lincolnshire.

Thanks for replies so far. So helpful. I really had no idea what ballpark was going to be.

We are moving in a week, east of England but the more pricey areas! 3 bed house but we have also a study and playroom so quite big. Cheapest was 1400 and most expensive was 2000. I was horrified after.many tales of under 1k on MN but that's just the cost round here. Got 4 quotes. Moving 1hr away.

Cost depends on lots of factors. Simple supply and demand is the main one as it costs more to move at "busy" times. Also, removal reps will quote according to what they think you can afford/are prepared to pay when they visit.

Funnyface1 · 21/01/2019 15:51

We paid £900 just over a year ago and it was worth every penny.

Thumbcat · 21/01/2019 16:11

We paid 1k including packing for a 3 bed house. Get several quotes and haggle. If you can move on any day other than a Friday you might get a better price.

SparkyTheCat · 21/01/2019 21:19

£900 last week, to move 3 bed amount of stuff approx 2 miles. Included packing.

CookiePolicy · 22/01/2019 09:09

I had a quote yesterday that would have been about £900 adding removal and packing. She said something about it taking more than a day for the actual moving. I was surprised at that. Is that usual? And also how long has packing taken for people?

We paid about 1400 last year. Had a similar price from 3 companies and 2k+ from pickfords.

We ended up having to move on a Monday so they came on Friday and packed most stuff up, then finished off on Monday morning before we moved at lunchtime. They were amazing.

sdaisy26 · 22/01/2019 10:14

One company wanted to do it all just on moving day but that felt too risky for me, I would have been really stressed we wouldn’t get out in time. It was definitely a full day plus a day for moving.

TokyoSushi · 22/01/2019 10:15

We're in the NW and hopefully moving in a few weeks, £700 without packing and £1K with.

Finfintytint · 22/01/2019 10:20

A few years ago ours cost £6k but that was two lorries and overnight stay in hotel, full packing and unpacking. It was a company relocation so we didn't pay (moved about an hour away).

missbattenburg · 22/01/2019 10:23

Had a similar move but over a greater distance (100 miles). Quotes including packing but not unpacking were all 1200 - 2000 £ mark. All wanted 1day to pack then a day to move. However about 20% of my stuff was already boxed and packed from the previous move plus that move had been over seas and back so I dint have any build up of crap (eg my loft was totally empty).

anniehm · 22/01/2019 11:19

I paid £1500 but it was over 100 miles so a two day move. When we moved locally we rented a truck and bribed dh's phd students with beer and pizza. Packed ourselves both times but boxes provided for the long move (we kept them for second move as it was a temporary one)

Bluesheep8 · 22/01/2019 13:14

cookie The duration of the move is dictated by the amount of packing, amount of time wrapping and protecting furniture, time taken to load vehicle, access to property, number of rooms/floors and the distance to travel between addresses.

Funnyface1 · 22/01/2019 19:45

Ours spent one day packing and moved us the next day. One company wanted to show up and start packing on moving day. No chance, I'd have had a nervous breakdown.
